Please help me.....how to restore my iPhone after a jailbreak has been done

Sorry to all if this is a stupid question......I am really new to all this and learning as I go. I recently purchased a iphone 3gs, It is running on the ios 5.1.1 and wanted it jailbroken to work with my phone company. I downloaded the tethered jailbreak by redsnow then downloaded from cydia the rocky racoon untethering program for tethered phones(man a little confusing huh lol) ok so now my phone is untethered......my question is this if I go into settings on my phoneunder general then RESET.....I see reset all settings and erase all contents and settings.....If I wanted to erase the rocky racoon and redsnow from my phone but keep all my contacts do i just hit reset all settings? will this basically take my phone back to factory setting dumping what ever jailbreak I use but keeping my contacts and stuff? or do I just need to reboot and restore to get rid of the jailbreak and loose everything on my phone.

Any help is greatly appreciated.....please talk to me like I am 10 LOL I am really really green with this all

Since your phone is jailbroken, reset all settings and erase all contents and settings won't work and you'll be stuck in a infinite boot loop.

Sync your contacts to iCloud or your computer

Restore your iPhone as a fresh new user if you want to go back to stock.

Normally "reset all settings and erase all contents and settings" will clear all the data, regardless what is on it and nothing will be saved.

"I recently purchased a iphone 3gs, It is running on the ios 5.1.1 and wanted it jailbroken to work with my phone company"

I hope you realize jailbreaking and unlocking is two totally different things.

    jailbreaking aka "root" access
    unlocking is unlocking.

Google is your best friend if you get stuck.

Thank you so much!! So when you say restore you mean sync my info to itunes then hit restore on itunes to take back to factory settings right? This will erase any jailbreaking and everything on phone?

The only way to delete your items without having to start over and rejailbreak is to delete items one by one otherwise you can always restore (luckily at this time of the year, as the latest firmware you'll be updated to is jailbreakable at the moment) and rejailbreak again.

I think the best thing to do [this is for mac OS, it might vary slightly with Win PC] is:

    1. Backup your iPhone data, i.e. address book, calendar, music, etc. via iTunes
    2. Then 'restore'....this will re-set to factory default. You should still be in 5.1.1
    3. I prefer absinthe and you might have to check to see which jb app is best for your iphone 3gs. Go to iclarified.com, the tutorial section and they will lead you to the right jb app.

After you jb, strongly suggest you save your SHSH blobs with tiny umbrella [google this for more details]

    Good luck

If you're looking to go back to stock, factory iOS 5.1.1 (latest as of June 9th), yes it's as simple as clicking that Restore button. Make sure to right click on your iPhone on the left pane and select Backup though so you can restore your Messages, Contacts, Photos, etc. after the software restore.
