Here's the scoop: for those who don't know, there is a method of Gevey unlock now that allows CDMA phones to be unlocked for GSM use. That said...I have a 64gb Verizon 4s unlocked with said Gevey method, running on Straight Talk. I found a great deal on a 32gb AT&T 4s on Craigslist for $350. Supposed to meet the guy in about an hour. SO - should I buy the ATT 32gb and sell the 64gb Verizon unit (for about $450-500) at a profit, or keep the 64gb since it's bigger storage and is working?
Not too concerned with the storage. 32 would be enough, but obviously more is always merrier. Major questions are would I get faster data (HSPA+) with the AT&T version over the unlocked Verizon version? And also - do you think the fact that it will be easier to update to new ios versions/updates in the future is an important factor?
I'm thinking between making $100-150, and not having to worry about future ios updates, AND the (maybe) possibility of getting faster data with a AT&T model, is worth going from 64gb to 32gb...thoughts?

Yeah? Hmm....I'm really torn now haha. Obviously having the 64gb is very nice, plus I checked the serial # and it's covered until March 2013...which is pretty awesome. Just concerned that maybe having this unlocked CDMA phone might pose problems later down the road when ios 6 drops...will be dependent on Gevey to unlock it.
Thanks for the advice, I'm mulling...
thats a different concern that the ATT version just being "faster". Its up to you but you're probably going to want the new iphone when it comes out anyways![]()
Yeah I'm sure I will haha. But then again, there's a good chance I will be sticking with my 4s for a while...unless I can save up to by the new one at full retail. I'm thinking between the profit and not having to worry about ios updates, I'm going to get the 32gb if it's in perfect condition. Even now with the 64, it's less than half full with all the music I want on there, so the only downside (going from 64gb to 32gb) isn't really even a big factor for me...again, thanks for the input though!
I had an AT&T iPhone and a Verizon iPhone 4S unlocked, using a straight talk sim card I got nearly the same exact speedtest results, the variations were within .3 Mbps, so I would have to say both phones are absolutely the same thing, there is no hardware difference between a Verizon iPhone 4S and AT&T iPhone 4S, but for future iOS updates I would recommend using the AT&T version because the CDMA iPhone is dependent on a jailbreak to be able to unlock it. While the AT&T iPhone had a Gevey unlock sim card working without jailbreak. That's just my 2 cents
If anyone cares at all, the guy didn't show for the AT&T 32gb sale, so I'm sticking with the unlocked Verizon 64gb for now. It's working great, just a LITTLE concerned about ios updates later down the road. But for now it's working beautifully.
The good deals on Craigslist magically never happen for some reason or another. Its always a bummer
Contrary to what people here are telling you...the iPhone 4S for AT&T isn't the same as the iPhone 4S for Verizon/Sprint. The Verizon/Sprint models have an ESN, the AT&T one doesn't!
The AT&T iPhone 4S doesn't have the CDMA bands in it! On the actual box of an iPhone 4S you can see which bands the phone includes....with that said - on a technical standpoint on whether the extra CDMA bands make the phone work slower or take up more RAM should be answered by an engineer.
I personaly wouldn't use a Verizon or Sprint iPhone 4S because it has that extra useless CDMA 800/1900 which I have no use for at all and another problem is the fact that in order to use it with Straight Talk you need a Gevey sim. There are reports that the Gevey sim can interferere with reception and texts going through along with international users stating that their caller ID is affected. I know this as a fact because I have family overseas that have compared a factory unlocked iPhone 4S and one that is using a Gevey Sim and all tests pointed that the one using the Gevey yielded poorer results in terms of reception, data speeds, etc.
If you can find a good deal on an AT&T iPhone 4S and sell your Verizon 4S then I would recommend it - if the ESN on that Verizon 4S is clean then you can get more money for it. AppleNBerry claim that this Gevey has improved signal in comparison to be previous Gevey's...why would they make this claim? It's proof that they acknowledge that Gevey provides poorer signal and was giving tons of problems when it was first introduced....so maybe now they improved but is it the same reception as a factory unlocked? I bet not.
A Verizon/Sprint iPhone 4S will never be unlocked in the future whereas with an AT&T iPhone 4S - you can call AT&T and open a case to have it unlocked even though you're not their customer!
Thanks for your input! I've been using the Gevey unlocked Verizon phone for the last few days, and while it's mostly been working well, I think I am going to try to trade in for an AT&T model. Just seems like a safer way to go. The Verizon iphone I have now is a mint condition 64gb with a clean serial # and is covered under Applecare until March 2013 (plus it's "unlocked"). So I'm thinking I should be able to get some good $ for it. That's part of why I'm still playing with the idea of just keeping it, because it's a pretty great phone/deal.
But I've realized that I can buy a 32/64gb ATT model for roughly the same price I should be able to sell this for, and I think in the long run it will be worth the trouble. It's only been a few days with the Verizon/Gevey iphone and already my data has dropped out several times, which didn't happen on my previous AT&T iphone 4. Between that and ios updates in the future, I think you're right about switching to an AT&T version...
iOS updates can make that Gevey useless in the future... who knows? There is no guarantee the Gevey will continue working. I think that iPhone would be better in the hands of a happy Verizon customer.
The good thing for that Verizon customer is that they can simply call Verizon to have it unlocked for international use (Verizon will have it unlocked for non-USA sim cards)...Verizon does it without any trouble and on the first phone call, but they will not have it unlocked for other USA carriers. Both Verizon and Sprint do this so you can use that as an added incentive of additional value for the potential buyer.
My relative who uses the Gevey sim abroad isn't happy with the performance and is planning to sell it and just get an unlocked version for international use. His chief complaints are 3G dropping out of nowhere and how the caller ID shows the + and country code rather than just the local # of where he's at. It's very confusing for him and he had to redo his whole phonebook for that. I just spoke to him and he said he doesn't want to use the Gevey anymore, he isn't happy that it takes time for the network to register when you turn the phone on after rebooting and he's upset with the 3G issues he's having.
You're using Straight Talk so an AT&T version is your best bet! You can later deal with AT&T and a receipt you print out of Excel for the unlocking for international use if you need it. AT&T is pretty accommodating in unlocking, you just open a case with them and they do it as long as the IMEI isn't currently associated with a contract.
