iPhone 4S - Carrier Switching and International Use
Hello All,
I've looked through a ton of threads and I think i'm more confused than before.
1) I travel international a lot for work but don't want the ridiculous carrier international rates. If I get it unlocked (like the normal Sprint unlock) I should be able to use an international sim on it no problem correct? Is this the same with ATT and Verizon without having to hack it?
2) If I do have to hack using Gevy or whatever method should the iphone work perfectly international?
3) Using Gevy is it possible to switch carriers like Verizon<->Sprint<->Att ?

Thanks a lot!
Once unlocked you will be fine. I have a Rogers handset that is unlocked and I use my prepaid sims in England, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Greece, Holland, Poland.. pretty much anywhere. Unlocking is the key. The rest is easy!

You will not be able to switch between VZW, Sprint, and AT&T, even if your phone is unlocked. VZW and Sprint will only activate phones that were originally sold by each respective carrier.
I am a little confused. My Verizon phone was able to roam on GSM because they used TDMA. Tell it was shutdown. The phone recognizes it as Analog. If PCS has TDMA, It could be technically be used on GSM.

Correct. A Sprint Iphone 4S will work with any international SIM once Sprint unlocks it for you. Even if unlocked it will not work with AT&T, Tmobile, or any of their MVNOs. The only way to use with an AT&T MVNO is, as mentioned in the quote, to use a Gevey SIM.

Is Sprint once again unlocking their iPhones for international SIMs? The last we heard here, they had stopped doing so, requiring users to use a Sprint-provided SIM and Sprint international roaming partners.

I believe if you are a long time customer with good payment history and credit their international department will unlock it. Thats how i did it by i have been with them since 2000
3. If you want to switch between cdma and gsm, you have to start with a cdma phone. GSM phones and apple's factory unlocked are locked on the cdma side because cdma providers are jerks; they won't take a phone that's not in their database.
You can't switch between between sprint and verizon, because...well, cdma providers are jerks.
It's best to use a carrier or factory unlock. Mainly because users don't bother to read the important stuff, update their ios and kill their gevey unlock.

Do you guys also happen to know if the Spring Iphone 4s can be used on Virgin Mobile prepaid?
Full situation
1) Bought iphone 4s for sprint as I'm on sprint now (from a friend so it's not on contract). But I will be working mostly out of the country for a few years so I got it carrier unlocked.
2) When I do come back to the US for a month or so at a time I rather not get a full new sprint plan just for that but sprint doesn't have prepaid... seems like their prepaid branch is Virgin.
3) Can I just use Virgin mobile prepaid when i'm back in the states?
Since Virgin will be offering the iPhone later this month, it's possible they will activate a Sprint iPhone. If not you can always use a prepaid GSM carrier for use at home, like GoPhone or Straight Talk or T-Mobile prepaid.

I understand that with correct baseband/jailbreak, you can use gevey to accept tmobile/att sim on a Sprint/Verizon iphone. I've never been able to find any information regarding the gsm bands the Verizon/Sprint iphones support though. Will a gevey unlocked Sprint/Verizon phone get 3G on AT&T? I assume it's only 2G on Tmobile because of their band situation, right? Thanks for the help guys.
