As far as I know, they have never had different hardware models. Quite some time after the VM release they did update the OS with a tiny update to disable the hotspot ability, but no hardware changes.

i need to know which optimus v virgin mobile sent me for a warranty replacement.i have 2 different optimus v's here.one has a brighter screen than the other. how do i tell the difference between a Class A or Class B?

There actually was a hardware change, I read about the comparison between the two in a thread about rooting the optimus v some time back. I don't know how to answer the question, though, just came in to verify that OP was correct in asking. Sorry, OP!
There are two screen/hardware versions, Novatek (Gen 1) and Hitachi (Gen 2). It has been said the Hitachi screens have more of a green tint . There are a few easy ways to check.
Settings > about phone: gen 2's will be froyo 2.2.2 instead of 2.2.1, plus zv5 radio baseband instead of zv4. Knowing what you have really doesn't matter unless your planning on rooting, roming, using fastboot or overclocking.

ahh I remember now, yea there was a note about how one of the new screens could blank out from a driver bug in some of the gingerbread roms.
