First off, I want to know: can I buy this phone and use it with a Monthly4G plan? I noticed it's not under the list of typical prepaid phones, but I don't mind paying a premium upfront to get this lovely device.

If yes, great!
Next question: I'll be spending my time in two somewhat distant areas: Belvidere, IL (61008) and Rock Island, IL (61201). From coverage maps, I see that 4G isn't available in Belvidere for me, but when I'm in nearby Rockford, I'll get it in certain areas. However, near Rock Island (in Moline, another of the Quad Cities in Illinois), the coverage map shows data as "roaming partner." In the Quad Cities is i wireless, which apparently is a T-Mobile affiliate, and they offer 4G in the Quad Cities. If I am in the "roaming" area, will I pick up on that 4G?

If not, it seems that doing i wireless would make more sense, no? From i wireless, "Plus, 4G is available in over 208 cities nationwide through our T-Mobile partnership." Is that a one-way thing? The companies are related, but buying from T-Mobile would get me 4G only in Rockford-ish, whereas from i wireless would get me in the Quad Cities + when near those other 208 cities? Thanks for helping me out!
Oh, and if I go with i wireless, is that phone compatible?

I think I can answer part of your coverage question. No T-Mobile prepaid plans include data roaming. Even though I-Wireless is a T-Mobile affiliate, T-Mobile still considers I-Wireless to be roaming. In any area marked as "roaming partner" on the T-Mobile coverage map, you won't be able to use data.
I tested a Galaxy Nexus with Monthly 4G in an area served by I-Wireless. I could make calls, but I couldn't use data at all. Not even Edge or GPRS worked.
yea no data roaming at all. years ago they let is do it but not anymore you would need a postpaid plain for that.
That's interesting. I'm considering switching back to T-Mobile after a 5+ year stint with AT&T. I'm in a similar boat with the OP.
I've chatted with two different TMO reps today. Both assured me the Monthly4G plan WILL get data in the "Partner Coverage" areas, though subject to data caps outlined in their Domestic Roaming agreement document here : http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-3299. They gave me the link.
I was adamant that I was asking about the pre-paid, Monthly4G plan, and both reps confirmed. So they were lying to me?
I can confirm they were lying.. I was recently traveling near rock island which is served by I wireless and all I got was talk and text on my monthly 4g phone, No data whatsoever. In fact, I might not have even gotten text but I can't be sure since I didn't send or receive any texts when I was there...
the rep got it wrong. prepaid phones do not data roam anymore no matter the plain. data only works on t mobile towers of course that may change later after they reform the sprint bands later this year. now as i said before post paid plains do data roam but you will be charged extra. i can confirm they don't at home i roam onto a at@t tower and all i get is voice and text. of course at home i have my own wifi,
T-Mo postpaid plans don't have data roaming charges. There is a domestic data roaming cap though depending on which data plan you have. I would know. I've been with them for 11 years now and just roamed for a week last month. Used voice/text/data.
