In case anyone hasn't noticed, the cell phone industry/market has changed very rapidly over recent years. Prices were low because there was growth from NEW customers. The market is now full. There are no new customers. This is what happens in any industry which experiences similar growth patterns and it is beyond anyone's control.

Yes, generally, greed does easily tend to get out of control.

Not sure what you think I missed.
But, I agree: Greed "is what happens in any industry which experiences similar growth patterns and it is beyond anyone's control."

And you're also correct that if more people go the lower cost route it will have some dampening effect on the greed.

Call me slow, but I was just look at cell plans comparing as a new customer and wow does a single line smart phone customer get screwed on the new plans.

I would lose a ton of data plus have a huge price increase for 2 smarts and 1 basic between the plan costing more and my employer discount loss. I would pay roughly $20 more than my current final price.

Yeah single lines on the new Verizon plans stink. Much better to do prepaid for single lines

Does anyone know if you can add a smartphone to a share everything plan as a data-only device? Maybe that way you could only pay $10/tablet a month for access instead of $40 for a smartphone?

I don't think that's going to happen, at least not right away. Most existing customers will stay on their old plans until their contract is up for renewal. Then they will look at the new plans to see if it's worth upgrading with a discount or not. For new customers most likely churning from another carrier, it's going to depend on how many lines they need and how much data they use.

I can't see single line customers going for the new plan unless VZW is the only carrier with good coverage in their area and they have no other choice. Just about every carrier offers something similar to the lower data bucket smartphone plan at a much lower cost.

It will be interesting to see what the new activation numbers look like later this year. I'm betting they'll drop like a rock.

I'm definitely not going on with the new plan. Right now, three lines with unlimited data only use 3gb per month combined. I'd love to switch to a plan that was more cost effective, but adding my 'home phone' onto it, my charges will be $30 more a month for less services we need.

Most single line customers use less than 2GB. They can upgrade with discount and get the 2GB/30 plan and their price doesn't increase in most cases. Single line customers who were on 900 min or unlimited minutes will save money on the new plans.

People on old plans will stay on their old plan until their contract is up unless there's a clear benefit from switching early. Some will stay on them even if they could benefit from switching just because they only pay attention when their contract renewal comes up. I'm sure the average user is still below 2GB, but the point is multiple carriers are offering much the same deal at around $50 per month as opposed to VZW's much higher rate.

Unless VZW has a clear coverage advantage in the individual person's area, I can't see single line customers going for Verizon over less expensive carriers. Like I said, the new subscriber numbers should be interesting.

I'm sorry, but that's misleading. Many customers only came to VZW and stay with VZW due to corporate discounts, which they are eligible for through their employers. Those legacy customers with unlimited data, not only get the unlimited data for $29.99, then they receive the corporate discount too. Once they renew their contract, taking upgrade pricing as you suggest, they would switch to a 2gb for $30.00 without any discount. To receive the discount, they would need to pick at a minimum, the 5gb for $50 tier.

    for example then:
    unlimited at $29.99 @ 20% = $23.99

    2gb at $30 @ 00% = $30.00

    5gb at $50 @ 20%= $40.00

Sure it's only a $6.01 increase if you use consistently less than 2gb. But it is still a price INCREASE and it's a loss of the peace of mind that comes with unlimited data.

I pay about $78/mo with my corp discounts for unlimited data, 900 min. With the friends and family portion of it and also free mobile to mobile on V's network I never come close to going over so basically same as unlimited min IMO.
I never text and they will have to pry this plan out of my cold dead hands as I'd be a fool to do anything different.
I'm single and have a single line only. I also have a razr Maxx. IMHO these days there is not as much innovation in phones as they have pretty much been there done that already. Not to mention for me these phones are less wow factor these days and more a useful tool to help me throughout the day. I don't see a whole
lot more they could be able to do that would be something I would need. So if I take the usual excellent care of my Maxx it shall serve me well for quite awhile.
Now as long as big red doesn't pull anything to try and get the rest of us off the unlimited plans I'm going to be good to go for a good long while. My next major upgrade will be getting LTE to my area. That will be like getting a whole new device , no extra charge!
