I've pondered this, and I think their mentality about the pricing is basically this -- Verizon and the other cell companies know that cellular service saturation amongst the public is very high -- most people already have service, so the only people that will be coming their way will be switching from another service. Why would someone switch to Verizon? For their crazy fast and widely available 4G. The type of customer that oohs and ahhs for that kind of speed will most likely be willing to pay a premium for it. They know they're already in #1 position in the US with lots of subs already on Unlimited data so in their eyes they're already being generous and loyal to the existing customers by letting them keep it up until you want an upgrade, then you either pay for the device or lower yourself to the tiered plans. The phones continue to get more expensive as well so they don't want to keep subsidizing expensive devices to make them $199 or $299 without a trade-off from the buyer.

Its possible the plans may work out at some point, but with the currently plans that they released I have a strong feeling that will fail. The idea of shared data between phones is not a bad idea. The thing is the plans verizon released are completely ridiculous on what you get for data. 1Gb for $50 bucks, are you serious that is just asking for overcharges. Now if they came up with a plan that offered like 4-5 gigs for $50 bucks shared then fine, but as it stands now the plans are a joke and everyone knows it. The plans will once again be changed next year around "SUMMER" just like last year after they lose customers. In theory shared data is a good idea but its poorly implemented by Verizon. If AT&T has been following whats been going on and I am sure they have they have seen the backlash verizon is having with these new plans. Sure AT&T will follow along but they would be stupid to follow the exact same plans verizon has put out. I am sure they would include more data might not be alot more but will be higher than verizon. Why didn't verizon just keep 30 bucks for 2GB data and 5GB data like there current plans now and have it shared? Basically the new plans work out to be about the same price as new plans but for LESS.

Another question I have is to what extent will vz go to in order to get people off the old plans for those out of contract at the time?

That's what I'm wondering too, I know U.S. Cellular is really pushing people to their new Belief Plans, and while they are good it's making current customers a bit miffed at times.

Verizon has already stated that once the new plans kick in next week to retain unlimited after such you will need to put an un-subsidized phone on that line. What isn't clear yet is to what happens in the case of plans w/ a mix of unlimited and capped lines. Over time they will probably lock you into the exact plan (meaning no minute changes) otherwise that will trigger a loss of unlimited. There is also nothing preventing them for adding a $10 fee like Sprint did for smartphones to nudge people off those plans. They probably won't do that because lets face it data is already highly profitable and LTE network has mondo capacity.

As to when AT&T will come out with their plans, bet 100% before the new iphone comes out, and don't expect it to vary from a few $ from Verizon. They have already forced many of their unlimited people down....

Sprint is in the middle of the NV upgrade. My wife is on VM. If I get 50kbs on the cell by our house that is a good day , however if you go to the next cell (consequently more people) it is not unusual to get 700-1000kbs which is more than adequate for $25/mo. Now that they are getting LTE off the ground they will catch up in 18mo or so.

Tmo is also upgrading thanks to ATT to LTE and already has fast HSPA (21/42) which is good for pretty much everything. Tmo is sucky outside of urban centers tho.

I have already cancelled my non corporate and have 2 phones on page plus (verizon) and one on VM (Sprint). My work phone (not paid by me) is iphone4s/Verizon which is a step down from the 4g droid I had before they made me "upgrade". It works though... It has more FC than I was led to suspect.

I'm still looking at the Credo offer I got, they will give me up to $350 per line to cover any ETFs, but I don't think there is much with 3 dumbphones and only 1 newer 1 last September. 40% off voice, so with 3 new Galaxy 2s at $49 each and the monthly plan running $162 before taxes (Unlimited text, data and 700 minutes), it doesn't look bad compared to the $120 we pay now for no data. Sprint is fine around here, and the 2nd year the price will increase $32, still not bad and then we are out of any contract.

My two year contract ends on 09/07/12 (when I got my current Droid X two years ago). Since it's almost up and there's no way I'm coming back with their total lack of 5"+ phablets, will they let me opt out? I don't wanna wait until September to switch to AT&T and get the Galaxy Note.
One burning question that will remain with him until his dying days....."Was my victory really worth the price I had to pay?"

You contracted to stay with Verizon for two years. What incentive do they have to let you out early? If you wait until there is two months left on your contract, then you can leave with a $140 ETF.

Why would they allow you to opt out? You signed a contract and should fulfill it and they have every right to hold you to that contract. You don't get to choose the phone offerings of Verizon, just because you're under contract. Besides there's nothing stopping you from getting a Galaxy Note on ATTM today.... Just go buy one. Then port your number to ATTM and pay your etf, or have two lines of service.... Verizon sure isn't keeping you from leaving, just fulfill your contract by paying the ETF or stick around until it runs out.

Since my contract doesn't end till later next year I'm golden for now.

That is unless they offer the iPhone 5 with a one year early upgrade. But even then by the time my upgrade/renewal time rolls around next year the new IPhone will be coming out so may as well just wait till then and decide.

For now I'm not going anywhere.

    $50/1gb is insane!

I will likely keep them for now, but i wont ever renew with verizon.

hopefully Google comes out with some unlocked LTE devices.

If the vz plans stick and att prices them similar, I think after contracts expire they will start losing some customers. The prices and choices kind of stink. I wouldn't be surprised if the day comes where I no longer use vz or att and move to a cheaper alternative. The basic phone plans aren't too bad(when compared to now) but the smartphones are getting too expensive for my taste.

I'm not saying they have to, or that they will. It's less than two and a half months away, so I could wait. But one possible reason is because I am up for a discounted new phone, and I need a new one badly, as my Droid X is falling apart. But I can't sign a new contract, because their TOS have been changed for the worst. Again, I'm not saying it's likely, but it's worth a shot. Supposedly, in their eyes they are losing money with me anyway. My contract is too cheap for my data usage.
