Nokia N9 no longer connecting to Gophone data

Hi folks. Just today i noticed that i'm no longer able to get any data applications to work. Voice and text work fine but not data. When trying to pull my gmail thru the pop3 mail app on my N9, it says "can't connect to server". Also bookmarks on my browser no longer work. I called AT&T GoPhone customer service and asked them if they blocked my IMEI number and the lady said no, she checked my records and confirmed there was no block. She gave me the usual "This is not a Gophone, so we can't really help". Wifi connection works fine, but not cellular data off AT&Ts network. It was working fine for the past 2.5 months, but now all seems dead. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

AT&T recognizes your phone as a smartphone. That is normal behavior for a smartphone without data packages. Here is another report:

I have been using AT&T gophone for six months now without any issues untill 6/11/2012. It appears they are finally cracking down on the N9 maybe.

Yup they sure are. I have two more weeks till renewal, and then i'll just migrate to Red Pocket. Bought their SIM card a couple of weeks ago off eBay, anticipating this happening. Oh well.

I seriously think AT&T is forcing manufacturers to give them their smartphones IMEI lists as a condition for selling their handsets. "What's this, Nokia? You want me to sell your Lumia 900? Fine, but only if you give me a list of your unbranded US 3G-compatible smartphone IMEI's so we can identify them as such."

I'm not surprised if once the Xperia Ion starts selling at AT&T, other non-AT&T Xperia phones start being flagged as smartphones AT&T's systems.

Maybe, but AT&T doesn't need any help from Nokia and Sony. As an operator member of the GSMA they have access to the IMEI database which lets them look up the make and model of any GSM phone by IMEI.

I suspect that they don't bother setting up device filters until their monitoring software detects heavy data usage on the $50 plan by a range of IMEIs.

I too feel so. I had a Nokia N8 and a N86 working very well on the $50 plan till last month. Then on the morning of May 7th the data service stopped on the N8. I popped the sim in the N86 and got the same result. Maybe AT&T has asked Nokia for their smartphone IMEI database.

AT&T doesn't *need* the phone makers' help but they'd use it anyways. It's much easier to get a list from the manufacturer than to go through all IMEIs in the GSMA database and figure out which models are smartphones and which ones aren't.
