Hey.
For three years straight, I had MTS as a provider. They charged me $33.25 monthly for the measly amount I used the phone. This was acceptable to me.
About 6 months ago they phoned my up and said they were changing my plan, but as long as I kept using the phone as I already was, the monthy bill would remain the same cost.
Lies. Dirty lies.
It's now doubling by average, and they're giving me the usual provider runaround for excuses, and included a $10 charge for 115k of data usage that I never used last month. Cripes, I have jpeg's which are bigger than that, and they're not worth $10.
I want alternatives. I maybe make 60 minutes of outgoing phone calls a month. I don't text. I don't browse. I don't game, or use the phone for anything other than voice. What choices do I have for a cheap cellphone in Manitoba?
You probably are looking at a Pay As You Go alternative...?
Carrier: MTS | Handset: Galaxy S3 | Plan: 100 minutes, U/L Evenings & Weekends, U/L SMS, Call Display | Data: UNLIMITED LTE - $16.50
My girlfriend was in the exact situation.
Contract was up and her bill was about to double.
They also charged her 15 bucks because someone sent her a picture message. She could not refuse it nor would they turn off the feature.
We decided to use Fido.
She gets unlimited texts, cheap minutes for talking etc.
She now pays about $15 per month with no hidden fees or cryptic bills.
Sadly, if you don't need data, don't use MTS.

Agreed - if you are a voice-only user, or even voice and text only, MTS is not a great choice unless you are bundled with TV and home phone. Then it's basically free.
Love how MTS still charges extra for picture messaging - lol. I just signed up with the TELUS Winnipeg 55 plan. $55/month with 5GB of data, unlimited SMS, and unlimited Manitoba calling. Can't get a better deal, especially with good coverage now and GREAT phones.
Also frequently referred to as "Positive Rate".
Yup.
I have been watching my data and i am usually around 3-4 gbs per month. I am very tempted by the unlimited province wide calling. The only crappy thing is that telus is on 2100mhz and your reception indoors would take a hit.
The coverage has gotten better with telus, but i don't know if it is enough to switch. I travel all over the province.
I hope MTS stops charging B.S. Fees and gets billing in line with everyone else. I pay 68 bucks a month for a 39 dollar plan.

MTS doesn't charge extra for picture messaging if you have data added or an unlimited text plan.
I'd say my $31.50 plan with MTS still isn't too shabby.
Is the coverage for Telus at all better on U of M campus? My wife dropped them as her carrier two years ago because she couldn't receive calls at all on campus there.
As for the original post - it sounds like, at 60 minutes a month, with nothing else, a PAYGo solution makes the most sense.
MTS Iphone 4 and Telus Iphone 4 took a trip to the US yesterday. Telus lost and did not regain service after the perimeter highway 75 south. MTS had usable service until the fasttrax gas station on the other side of the border in Pembina. Just saying.
Reliable until Ste Agathe. And they ARE expanding to the border: http://www.pembinavalleyonline.com/i...4841&Itemid=33
^^
I live 8 miles from Emerson and there is zero Telus action in this area.
We were contacted by Telus two or three years ago, they wanted permission to put towers on either of 3 different pieces of land we own that is right on highway 75. We said that'd be fine as long as the tower was freestanding and didn't have guy wires since driving around guy wires with farm equipment is a hassle.
They sent the contracts, we had some issues with it and contacted the guy from Telus with our concerns. (Minor things like if Telus decided to leave in 15 years they had it written in that they didn't have to get rid of fencing and concrete, we figured if they left in 15 years they could clean up their own mess)
The guy never even called back to hear us out. Same story goes for 3 other farms in our area. Telus has been poking around here for a few years yet nothing has come to pass.
Shortly after Arseny made those comments, MTS put up a repeater in Emerson. Now Rogers and MTS use that repeater. Telus still doesn't exist. I also don't believe any cell provider would put a primary tower up near Emerson anyway since Emerson is less than a mile from the US border. Would seem pretty pointless to only use 270 degrees of a very expensive structure.
Also if Telus has service to St. Agathe, it's weak at best. The guys who were here building the new bridge on 201 over the Red River from BC who had Telus phones said they had usable signal to St. Adolphe, right by the dirt race track road at best. By St. Agathe they said there might be bars and it might say "Telus" instead of "Searching or No Service" but you couldn't actually use your phone.
Believe me, if Telus does come to this area, I'd be interested. Especially if they improve coverage near Dominion City. But they've been blowing smoke for a very long time and we have yet to see anything come of it.
