There will be announcements and its within the next six months

From my T-Mobile Galaxy S II
LTE has arrived. The third carrier in Las Vegas with 10x10 LTE coverage

Coverage will expand to 100 million LTE pops for the first half of 2013, with the second half of 2013 expanding to 200 million POPs covered. Release 10 LTE (2×10, 2×20) will be better performing than all other competitors.
T-Mobile USA. “This year, we’re stepping on the gas again. We are making continued coverage improvements and launching an advanced LTE network

It seems that my options are:

$75/month to stick with AT&T: plenty of minutes, pay-per-use intl texting, and fast data
$60/month to switch to ST: same as AT&T except no intl texting
$45/month to switch to T-Mobile: 100 minute voice limit and slow data

Fast data is critical for me. I could limit my voice to 100 minutes easily, but I cannot go without fast data. I'm still a little wary of StraightTalk given how cagey they are being about the actual data limits, but it seems they are the only real alternative.

PS While putting this together, I called AT&T to inquire about my ETF, and they ended up agreeing to give me a $20 credit for the next 6 months, making my effective cost $55/month. So I'll re-evaluate in a few months.

How can I tell when T-Mobile will have iPhone-compatible 4G service? Is this something that is likely/possible in the next 6-12 months? Or is this a much longer timeline?
Nice breakdown and nice job getting the discount!

As for the when, that's the million dollar question. I've been sitting on the fence because of that but decided to just bite the bullet and buy the unlocked Nexus since who knows when the 1900 will be ready in my area. Phone has been ordered as well as activation SIM. We'll see how that goes. Its my first smartphone apart from a 2 week trial with the Exhibit II which I was lukewarm on but like the looks of ICS and that the phone is unhindered by provider software out of the box (no rooting required).

I know TMO has made this a priority though but you're best bet is to keep following these forums, tmonews, etc. You are not alone in wanting your iPhone to work on TMO so there'll be a lot of noise when the re-farming effort takes hold.

Here's something that'd be worthwhile for TMO stores to do (maybe some do this?). Take your GSM phone in, pop in some trial demo SIM, and test it at the store.

+1 for using a factory unlocked 4s on TMO. I'm on my 3rd week since porting from GoPhone, and *love* the unlimited text & data. The EDGE speeds don't bother me nearly as much AT&T's gouging GP users. Then again, I don't stream anything.

Oh, and every TMO person I've asked so far, has said next quarter is when we'll see speed bumps due to re-farming
