I too as well use a captivate glide and have never owned a blackberry, but two friends have curves and my bf owns a bold 9900. Personally BB never appealed to me both from an OS and keyboard size point of view.
Two cousins recently went to IOS and Android after using BBs. I constantly rail on my gf and buddies for having BBs, and both also own play books that have already had to be repaired.
In my opinion RIM is more of a feature phone but with good messaging capabilities. You do get BBM as well as compressed data. But that is about where it ends as a full "smartphone". My gf was asking about apps like draw something, and eventually got a samsung tab to fulfill her app/entertainment needs.
As a canadian honestly i do not want to see RIM fail, but BB10 is probaly too little, too late. RIM hasn't helped themselves with the playbook fiasco. The design of the keybard should lead them to just concentrating on hardware, which they usually do well.
I use my Glide for msging (ironically enough can't get past using a physical qwerty) but have always like a landscape layout better. I also use an SGS2 and both have adequate battery life. But having a 4 inch screen is a sweet spot for alot of people, as well as customization options. Just my 2 cents.

I reject your reality and substitute my own!
Back to the original poster's observation: future trends are what is important. Sure there are millions of BB's in use, but what are current sales compared to previous sales, and what are future projections of sales? This is RIM's problem: the future is bleak!
I once loved my BB. I now have an iphone 4S and trust me it's not just a status symbol. The things I can do with this phone is amazing compared to any BB. Also the caveat is things you can do much easier: credit card attachment for my small business to swipe cards, Pedometer app, blood pressure monitoring, transferring cash with bank apps, stocks quotes, the list goes on and on. I do hope the.new BB iOS will save the company, but BB mgmt didn't have the visionary of Steve's Job. Androids are clones of apples IOS.
Cell phone history:
Motorola DPC 550 -> Ericsson DF388 -> Sanyo SCP-4000 -> Samsung SCH-N150 -> Samsung SCH-T300 -> LG TM520 -> LG VX-4600 -> BlackBerry 6750 -> BlackBerry 7250 -> Samsung SGH-807 -> T-Mobile Dash -> Motorola RAZR -> BlackBerry Bold 9000 -> BlackBerry Torch 9800 -> Samsung Galaxy S Captivate -> Samsung Nexus S -> Samsung Galaxy S III LTE
Canadians are loyal to their own. unfortunately Rimm let them all down with lousy products. even the Canadians are losing patience. rimm's Goose is now Cooked.
I would not say they are dead but is going to be a hard climb out of the gutter.

actually that's not really how it is. android is getting more and more refined. the hardware is getting more and more refined. phones like galaxy s3 and HTC One X are about as good as you can get. And that includes Apple. Every generation of Android brings a better customer experience. You do realize that each and every day rimm loses thousands of customers to android and IOS? And it's extremely rare for anybody to actually switch to BB. And soon rimm will have a windows phone 8 problem. Rimm can't even get their bb10 platform out. it will be over a year late. and that's even if it ships. many are skeptical of even that.
Android is what 4 or 5 years old? BB has been around since what the 80s or 90s? the fact is Android gets more robust and secure every generation. it was just approved for use by US dept of defense in December of last year. it has momentum. it is Winning.

And that is why two branches canceled Android and Apple products and are going for Blacberry. Android is as secure as the old skeleton lock's, with about 9 master key's you could unlock about 90% of them. Now I know Android is better that it was but it is still the least secure platform of all of the current choices, sorry but these are the facts.
Phone OS's used: iOS Android; BB 6,7,10 WP 7.5
Current phone OS's: Blackberry 10, 7; Window Phone 7.5
RIM isn't going to be able to sustain their business based on government users and ultra security conscious corporations that supply phones to their employees. It doesn't really matter which is better or more secure, the market is going to decide who dominates and who goes into a death spiral.
The funny thing though, is that most of the Android specific tools I use are security related: encrypted text messages (TextSecure), encrypted IM (OTR based), encrypted voice calls (zrtp), app to store data in dropbox encrypted (boxcryptor), k-9mail+apg for gpg encrypted email.

The first RIM handheld came out in 1996. The 950 came out a couple of years later.
I had a RIM 950 around 2000 or so. it was a revolutionary device at the time. Was about the size of the bulkier 2 way pagers. It just did email, but did it well. It used a data network that was very slow by today's standards, so bandwidth conservation was very important. RIM really was a pioneer for a technology we all pretty much take for granted now.
Slow down, If people are keeping the BB, why would they need to buy other phones? It is like a resturaunt that has loyal customers, sure the resturaunt accross the street gets new customers maybe more on occasion, but, the steady loyal customers keep coming and they are sufficient. those "new" customers are seen for what they are, tourist" cannot bank on tourist, regulars is where it is at.
Blackberry!!!
/here is the scoop for me, I don't need an app to take a cr#p, I want my Emails real time, text and phone calls, If I cannot have my black berry, I will go back to the dumb phone, no need to have a wannabe laptop which I can distiguish between the two, when I have a laptop. Phones cannot burn DVD/CDs, they cannot do what my laptop does, so why kid myself? Phone is a phone. Look ma, my phone can wipe my Arse.
