I'm not sure whether this should go in the OS 6.0 thread or whether it should be stand-alone. It's not really about OS 6.0, just the upgrade experience. Mods, if you disagree feel free to merge it.
So I just upgraded my 4s to OS6. Last night right before I went to sleep I decided to stick OS6 on my 4s. I have an Apple developer account because I need it to publish the HoFo iOS app. I logged into the Apple Dev site and downloaded the OS6 DMG. Next I extracted the ipsw file and updated using iTunes on my Windows 7 computer. After the update I got a message saying that my iPhone wasn't authorized to run OS 6.0.
Before I continue I should mention that I always have problems everytime I update to a new beta version of iOS. When I updated my iPad 2 and iPhone 4 to OS 5 beta I had to basically start from scratch because I wasn't able to backup my phones. I did figure out the problem eventually - I had a bad apple cable. Back to the story:
Turns out I forgot to add my 4s to my developer profile. No problem, I just need to get the UDID. Well, my 4s wasn't activated after the upgrade so I couldn't run one of those UDID programs on it. To make things more complicated iTunes wouldn't let me view the UDID because it was displaying the same message.
I searched around and it turns out I might be able to view the UDID if I use Xcode. The problem is that while I do own a Mac I don't really use it. First I had to find my Mac (I moved recently). After I found it and turned it on I had to install the latest version of iTunes (It was running an old beta version from the OS5 beta deays). After that was installed I tried to install Xcode but it gave me a cryptic message that basically said 'the install didn't work, I don't know why'. Now I was a little annoyed.
Did I mention I don't use my Mac much? I probably use it on average once every 6 months when I'm forced to. Since Xcode wasn't working I decided maybe it needed a software update. I clicked the apple logo in the top corner and updated. The updates took a long time to run. After they finished I tried to install Xcode again and got the same message. Turns out it had more updates to install. When they were finished I was finally able to install Xcode.
Once Xcode was installed I was able to view my 4s UDID. I added the UDID to my apple developer account and now I'm able to use my OS6 phone.
Sounds like you caused all sorts of unnecessary issues for your self.
Updates because you rarely use the system (same goes for windows systems)
You have done the betas before so you should already know about registering your device UID.
Sounds like your post is nothing about iOS6 and all about whining you have to use a mac.

Upgrading the Beta's are always a bit of a hassle, I guess in that way Apple has accomplished their goal in keeping others from installing it. Early on when it was much easier for the "Average" person to install the Betas, they'd do it and then complain about everything failing to realize what "Beta" meant. The betas are never meant to be run on an everyday phone, hence why the backup function does not work the way it does with retail versions. The beta is purely for a Developer to test their app. I'd imagine the Retail rollout fo iOS 6 will be much easier, very likely it will be an OTA update, Apple really pushed the percent of users they have on their newest OS, they are going to make the iOS 6 update as easy as possible.
Of course, I'm sure you learned your lesson, maybe pull that Mac out and run the updates or make sure you have the UDID's on your Dev account. Of course, I know who you are, so I won't say anything else.
It doesn't, I think the original post is baseless complaining... even if it is from howard... but the forums would be fairly empty without that so what ever

Hmmm, since when did Apple package iOS in a DMG file extension? iOS 5 never did just straight ipsw from the dev site. Also how did you extract on Win7 as its a file format not normally recognized by NT systems?? All this before the old Mac was pulled out of retirement?
Must've been very frustrating.
Formerly: Prom1, now I'm Supa_Fly!! My Feedback Mah Na Mah Na.
7 zip can extract the ipsw. I actually had to extract the DMG and then extract again to get the ipsw.

Where did you get the iOS6 prior to release date. It was a beta probably right? Anyways how did you go about getting it. Do you need to be a developer in order to recieve the beta?
I was gonna do that but I'm gonna wait it out cuz then it will ruin the iOS 6 surprise experience lol. I really wanted to do it when iOS 5 beta came out but decided not to lol. Love iOS 5 :d
