Can I port my number anytiome or does it have to be done when activating a new sim?

As the title says...do I have to choose to port my number when activating a new sim card, or can I do it anytime. I want to make sure the service works fine for me before getting into porting my number. I would like to give it 30 days on the Straight Talk issued number, and then port my number after I confirm that everything is a-ok. Is this possible, or can I only port at the time I activate a new sim?

Obviously I could just order a new sim card if the answer is no, but I'd like to save the $15 bucks if possible.

This has been asked and answered many times. The sim can only ever be assigned one number. If you want to try out on one of their numbers and then port, you can do that, but you'll have to order another sim and have it available and ready when you are wanting to port. You can then switch you account over to that new sim with your old number, and it will even transfer any time you have left on your month over to that new sim.

Why not save $45 and borrow "your wife's phone" to try out the service?

At&t changes numbers without changing sims, perhaps these sims are different enough from the trac/net10/st sims that it can be done here also.

I wouldn't count on it. There have been one or two reports of people having their number changed, compared to dozens who have said that they were not able to. You can definitely try it, but you'll likely be disappointed. The only reports I've heard of it being done was when ST botched a port or some such error when they were at fault. Whether or not it is physically possible with the SIM, obviously if you have even one example it is POSSIBLE. However, it is company policy not to do it, and that's a policy that they follow pretty strictly.

I think it's an administrative issue. Phone numbers are tied to a database of SIM serial numbers and IMEI pairs. Either for procedural, or legal (DHS?) reasons, "they" usually prefer to assign phone numbers to unique SIM/IMEI number pairs.
