Unlocked Iphone (3gs, 4.3.3 IOS) on AT&T Gophone Unlimited plan

Hello, I hope this isn't a repeat of antoher thread. I have the 3gs unlocked w/4.3.3. Ios and am looking at switching from PP Cellular to AT&T Gophone Unliminted Plan, since I simply can not get used to the Palm Pixi that I use w/PP. Is it possible to port my number from PP to AT&T without buying a gophone? I live in Seattle, which doesn't get the best AT&T service, but I want to know what others' experiences with Gophone Unlimited plan has been. I see there are some less expensive prepaids that allow Iphone use, but AT&T is a known entity to me. Anything I should know? Also, can I upgrade my Ios and is it worth it? I'm secretly waiting to see what the Iphone 5 has to offer, so I might just be biding my time, but I'm committed to prepaid plans as they save money. Thanks.

i dont think you need to buy a gophone but you need to get a sim and get it activated for prepaid, it might be easier if u get straight talk sim for an unlimited 45$ a month plan like alot of people will reccomend but it can definitly be done, im trying to figure out what to do now since my att store isnt a authorized att dealer so they wont just give me a sim, so you should call and ask about a sim, if not you could always try straight talk.

Thanks. I'm afraid of Straigh Talk because of the awful customer service people have written about in reviews.

You can update the IOS to 5.1.1, but if you use Ultrasn0w to unlock, I would be sure to preserve the baseband when updating. If your phone is carrier unlocked(you called ATT and had them unlock it recently when Apple gave them the go-ahead), then disregard the part about baseband preservation. If you do jailbreak and use Ultrasn0w to unlock, since you're on 4.3.3, my guess is you do... you should use F0recast(Windows, Mac) to determine the baseband version and post it here before you attempt an update.

Thanks Overdrive. I wonder if ATT would give me the unlock code. I didn't unlock through them. Is there a compelling reason I should unlock and update the IOS? Can't I see the baseband on the phone? Sorry for the novice questions, but I'm no techie.
I love my Iphone, but my daughter's LG g2x is awesome and way faster on Simple Mobile

You can determine the baseband on the phone too, I prefer to use the F0recast tools since they show several important details all at once including some you cannot determine in the phone settings. How did you unlock? IOS 5 has many features that IOS 4 does not, including some pretty important security related updates.

Whoa, before you make the unequivocal statement where do you live? It has everything to do with where you are as to what kind of service you get. I don't understand people who make blanket statements like this as if whole cities have crappy service.

if your iPhone was originally on AT&T requiring a SIM card, which is most likely the case if you have a 3GS bought in the United States, then you don't need to unlock it or to jailbreak it to use on AT&T GoPhone. just get a new SIM card and activate the SIM card online. for my iphones, bought my SIM cards for like $5 each on amazon. (if you ever get an iPhone 4 or 4S, you'll need a Micro SIM, or you get a regular SIM and get a cutter to convert it to a Micro SIM.) then activate the SIM online -- search for AT&T GoPhone Activation to find where online to do it. for my three iPhones, 3G 3GS and 4, which are all locked to AT&T, no jailbreak, no unlock to get on AT&T GoPhone, just activate SIM for AT&T GoPhone and then use safari on the iPhone to go to the unlockit.co.nz website to set the APN settings on the iPhone in order to get cellular data and 3g to work on the iPhone.

others may tell you to go with Airvoice, H20, and the other carriers that are MVNOs that piggyback on AT&T as the actual underlying network but where you are paying the cheaper price to the MVNO. you can do that for a locked AT&T iphone and save some money. use the unlockit site to set the APN and you're set to go without unlocking/jailbreaking. for me, have used the AT&T GoPhone service on all my iphones 3G, 3GS, 4. my iPhone 4 is currently my main phone on AT&T GoPhone. then later switched my iPhone 3GS to H20 because H20 is cheaper economically for me to have since have two operating iphones. my iPhone 3G is currently just an ipod touch on wifi because don't want to spend any more money on my iphones. lol

for my iPhone 4, it's $25 per month for the AT&T GoPhone prepaid monthly plan for 250 minutes and unlimited texts, plus also $5 per month for AT&T GoPhone monthly data package for 50 megabytes a month. currently have accumulated over 400 megabytes rolling over each month for the data. have that data for when not around my wifi -- because use mostly wifi for my internet -- and the cellular data is for when on the road and elsewhere where no wifi. the cellular data and 3G are always turned on for my iPhone 4 although using wifi most of the time when at home. just put money on your gophone account every month and then AT&T takes out the appropriate amount on the due dates. for instance, currently have something like only $24 as a balance in my gophone account and therefore have to remind myself to put at least another $25 on the gophone account before the due date for next month, or most likely for me will put $50 or $60 on my gophone account to cover the next couple of months.

note, if you don't want to pay for data, and only want to do wifi, you can go really really cheap on AT&T GoPhone on the gophone per minute plan for ten cents a minute and twenty cents per text BUT no data where you only pay $25 every 90 days. but if you want cellular data 3G on your iphone, then you have to get a monthly prepaid plan for at least $25 a month (or $50 a month for unlimited voice/txt) -plus- $5 (50mb) or $15 (200mb) or $25 (1gig) a month for data where the data can rollover and accumulate if you renew on time or setting it all to automatically renew, but where you just need to make sure that you have enough money sitting in your gophone account. note that the data on the $50 unlimited gophone monthly plan is only if you have a dumb feature phone. if you have a smartphone like an iphone that you want to use data on, then you need the monthly plan plus also the monthly data package.

for my iPhone 3GS, paying $30 every 90 days (or you can pay $20 every 60 days, or $10 every 30 days) on the minute plan for H20 Wireless. that's five cents a minute, five cents per text, but 30 cents per megabyte for data. in actual usage, the data paid out is per byte or kilobyte like for pennies each time or more if you use more data at a time. but for me, turned off the cellular data and the 3G on the iPhone 3GS to save on the cellular data usage except when have to turn that back on when away from my home's wifi. the iPhone 3GS is my backup iphone and so it's mostly at home on wifi only with the cellular data and 3G turned off.

one bad thing that you'll find with H20 and the other MVNOs that use AT&T as the underlying network is that you cannot turn off the balance notifications that you get after each call and after each data usage. very very very very annoying. (and that is why the cellular data and 3G are turned off on my iPhone 3GS when on H20.)

you can only turn off those annoying balance notifications if you are on AT&T GoPhone by clicking a setting at the gophone's paygonline website. so that's why, for me, keeping my iPhone 4 on AT&T GoPhone as my primary phone and only have my iPhone 3GS on H20 as a backup phone.
