My original Evo 4g has been quite a trooper for the past two years but sadly it's winding down and needing to be replaced soon. I'm one of the fortunate few that gets full 4g wimax reception throughout the city I live in. Does anyone know when LTE test sites will start going up in Orange County California? I want to order the new SGSIII really bad but without LTE up yet, the phone would be pointless for me to activate and use. 3g speeds where I live are worse than dial-up and sometimes takes so long that it's not even worth waiting for. Should I wait it out a bit longer for LTE to get deployed before upgrading?
I had the original EVO as well in the early Clear WiMAX market(Dec. '08). I have WiMAX coverage at home etc. but I upgraded to the new EVO with no regrets knowing it could be late this year before LTE connectivity. For you it could depend on how often you are around WiFi network(s). I do find myself using WiFi much more without WiMAX connectivity.
What sucks is the office building next to the one I work in is blanketed with wifi but the office building I'm in isn't. Both are owned by the same property management company.
I try to keep off of my company internet when it comes to personal use so I rely on my phone to catch up on things and stream music. Everytime I turn wimax off and stream with 3g I get hiccups throughout the songs because the data just isn't fast enough.
My evo isn't going to last much longer though. Hoping it'll last me until lte is deployed.
The touch digitizer has a mind of its own about most of the time. Ill touch the screen and sometimes it just goes haywire.
The phone lives on a charger but that can be resolved with a new battery.
It's rooted with cm7 and I can honestly say I think cm7 is the biggest pos rom. Constant crashes and restarts. 4g frequently crashes the phone. 4g connection constantly drops while I'm sitting down in the same spot and not moving. I could put the sprint rom back on but I hate sense.
Aside from that, it's an awesome phone
I'm in much the same boat, only I have an Epic.
From what I've heard, we shouldn't expect LTE here (metro PHL) until sometime next year. I use about 10 GB/month, mostly on WiMax, and the prospect of throttling back to EVDO only is painful to contemplate. In my opinion, having one of the (by all accounts) excellent new LTE handsets without the network to support it would be a poor tradeoff.
So if I had to replace my Epic tomorrow, I'd just get a WiMax device off of CL or something, and keep my powder dry on the upgrade.
