I've recently decided that I was paying too much for PCS service. While I enjoy having the 'net at the tip of my fingers, I think that life has more to offer. Not to mention, all the lousy changes that Verizon has been making recently. I just sold my unlimited data plan with my 4G LTE phone and went with prepaid service.
That said, Verizon, you can make as many changes as you'd like, and hopefully, people will start talking with their wallet.
can't say that i blame you.

I'm constantly looking at costs and asking myself if I really need to spend all this money on a smartphone. Then I look at all the features that I wouldn't have with a basic phone; a GPS that is easy to use and doesn't need yearly ($$) map updates; weather apps that gives me information for exactly where I want, when I want; Gas Buddy that helps me find the least expensive nearby gas stations; all my contacts and address information at my fingertips; my calendar readily available wherever I am making appointments;a decent camera; the ability to look up product information while in the store; apps for almost everything; the list goes on and on.
Somehow I find that the savings in other areas and the convenience justifies the cost. YMMV.
UB, you have been around for a long time and have quite a few posts to your credit. Hope you come back and let us know how life goes on without a smartphone.
I'm sure more people will prob follow due to how expensive things are getting. Cells are like car payments these days.
I would do the same, but VZW has the best network coverage in my area. I bought my current phone for full price. That way, I own it instead of VZW owning me.
Rooted Droid 4 with Jelly Bean 4.1.2, system version 98.72.18.XT894.Verizon.en.US
I charge forward recklessly, leaving chaos in my wake.
Boycott phones that lack microSD storage!

I have often wondered how it is to go from a smartphone to a basic one. To be honest, I'm not sure if I could do it. Wish you luck OP.
Posted from my Droid Razr Maxx.
I carried a flip phone and a blackberry, both for personal use, for about a year. I imagine a wifi only device would be similar.
My girlfriend gets a week of use on her basic phone, I'm lucky to get a day with my DX but my tablet has been running for 8 says and is still at 40% battery. Might be a nice change.

I did it for a while.
AT&T prepaid using a Rugby 2 flip phone. Unlimited talk, text and dumb internet using opera. About 47 a month with discounts. I'm on the phone about 2500 minutes a month so the flip phones just "fit" better to talk on.
I did miss the capabilities of a smart phone so I activated a G2x on the 30.00 T-Mobile plan with 5GB of data. I still have it and tether with it while away from home which through the summer is 4 days a week.
I was paying just a tad over 75.00 a month which to me was great.
I'm considering Page Plus for its 40 a month unlimited plan using the Samsung. Convoy 2, keeping T-Mobile for data and my wife on the 29.99 plan as it's all she wants/needs.
Under 100.00 a month for all 3 devices is less than I pay just for my Verizon line.

I do feel your pain. Luckily I have the $20 credit for txt and unlimited data per line and a 25% corp discount.
Although you improved your situation by leaving you really didn't hurt VZW since your revenue stream was replaced by the person you sold your unlimited line to. Your wallet got fatter and VZW's wallet remained the same.
I'm just looking at it from an accountant's point of view.
I am grabbing a Nexus & going the t-mobile route, or the PP route with an iPhone & start seeing the savings. Good move OP
I left Verizon quite a while ago when they implemented mandatory data on "feature" phones. If my family were still with them under our old plan of 1400 minutes, shared unlimited texting with four phones and two smartphones along with two texting phones, I'd be giving them around $200 a month with a 15% discount covering most of my taxes a fees.
Instead I have two iPhones on Straight Talk and two smartphones without any real data on Straight Talk. The two Straight Talk phones are $45x2 and the two kid smartphones are $12x2.
$114 with no additional taxes or fees is quite the savings in my mind. It is over $2000 over the course of a two year contract. With their new "shared" plans which I am sure, just like with unlimited data they will all begin forcing people to take on after the initial outrage dies down, my costs would be even higher. I said goodbye and most other people should as well.
