My parents are coming to visit me for 2 weeks during July. They have 2 GSM Blackberries that needs phone service (data is optional). I looked around a bit and it seems GSM Blackberries are harder to find provider. Are there any provider that will do voice only on a pay as you go basis or only monthly plans (like simple mobile)?
yes unlocked. they are from china so they buy unlocked phones always.
For voice calls, any SIM should work. It's only when you need data / BIS / BES that it gets complicated.
Make sure the phones cover USA frequency bands (850 and 1900 MHz). In a very few areas on AT&T you need 2100 MHz.
For only two weeks, I would suggest you to just get them the cheapest pay-to-go plan for the minutes/txt (compare GoPhone/AirVoice/H2O with their estimated usage) and just depend on wi-fi for their data and BIS (BBM/push-mail) feature. You may even be able to help them with a mobile wifi hotspot if you have a phone with a data plan that's capable of doing that, or better, own a Mi-Fi device.
If BIS functions are absolutely necessary through 3g/4g, there are a couple of viable options, but they are not cheap:
1. T-Mobile 'walmart plan' $30 (100 minutes/unlimited text/5GB 4g data) + $10 blackberry add-on = $40 + sim card cost (sometimes 99 cents online, but regular price is $5.99). This is good for a month.
2. Simple Mobile Blackberry is $50 ($60 for 4G, but I don't think their phones will be compatible) + $13 sim card cost (this plan has unlimited talk/text). This plan is also good for a month.
Good luck.
Thank you guys a lot, gonna go do some search now.
