The premium for the Big 3 and their flanker brands is largely influenced by their nationwide coverage and better reception. When you were implying the extra saving by picking the entrants over the Big 3 should be used to buy femtocells isn't really a solution since you will experience little to no reception in many area's not including your home.
Then explain why Rogers provides UMA and charges $20/month for it?

    Clear things up?
3rd world countries are much better in terms of communicating rather then Canada
there are towers in every part of the world
no contracts you buy a card call anywhere ..in the country
and look at Canada , we live in 1st world country and we visit places and don't have phone signals... sucks....

Which is exactly why I switched FROM Wind TO Mobilicity.

While Wind was happy to expand their coverage to areas that I never travel to, instead of fixing holes in their coverage area (such as my apartment). While I was with Wind, I had my reception decrease over time due to more and more subscribers coming online with no new towers being built in my area (I must have been on the fringe of whatever towers covered me).

Mobilicity has worked wonderfully for me ever since I first switched to them over a year ago.

    As for the competitors:

Koodo: Can't combine City Koodo with a decent data plan. Canada-wide unlimited + 2gb of data = $75/month

Virgin: City Unlimited + 2gb of data + VM + CID = $70/mth BUT I'm unsure if I can get those two because the website keeps pushing me to "smartphone" plans because I picked an Android phone.

Chatr: Doesn't offer more than a paltry 100mb of data, which is too little for me$. And at that level the price is $45/mth.

Now that I rarely, if ever, tether my laptop to my phone, even the ideal Koodo/Virgin/Chatr plan will cost me $70/mth, which is noticeably more than the $37.50 I'm paying with Mobilicity. And like I said, Mobilicity works great for me.

I'll be happy to answer that.

First of all not sure where you got $20/month since none of Rogers' UMA features are $20/month.

Secondly, I never did say Rogers, in this case, had perfect reception I said better. Offering UMA does not automatically mean the carrier has horrible reception. Sure there may be fringe areas with Rogers and if WiFi is available UMA is a great choice for only $5/month. However, I don't know a single person on UMA and being honest in many cases than not, with the exception of rural areas, the Big 3 have some level of service so UMA is not absolutely necessary.

Thirdly, there are many advantages of UMA you may not know. One such is the ability to call home back home to Canada and even receive calls from Canada without roaming fee's or even add unlimited local calling for only $10. (Yes there are cheaper VOIP operators but allowing to keep your existing number and talking about the general public it is a great add-on at a decent price.)

Mobilicity is offering an option. Mobilicity customers can choose to buy it out not. Rates are still low compared to Robellus rates! I hope Mobilicity continues to offer value and improvements. I can see why people are complaining about buying equipment. I too wish to have it all but the current reality is what it is. The beauty of it all is now we have more choices than before! Long live Mobilicity!

From a certain angle some of that doesn't seem all that surprising. Order Countries by population density and Canada is #231 out of #242.

I'll take Egypt as an example since it's somewhat of a developing country and I've also been there. It's ranked #127. The population density is over 20 times as high. Then I recalled seeing a whole lot of sand basically as far as you could see from a plane flying down above the Nile and realized that most of Egypt doesn't have cell phone coverage either. A lot of this is really easy to explain just by looking at population.

While population density is a factor, I don't think the ranking matters. Canada may have a large land mass, but 90% of the Canadian population lives within 150km of the US border.

What matters is how clustered the population is. As long as the population is clustered, it doesn't matter what the rankings are. It may be economically viable to setup operations in clustered area rather than sparsely populated ones.

Australia's population is similar to Canada's, yet they don't get screwed with cellular service. It's no excuse.
The word 'Pentaband' means '5 Bands', from the Greek word 'pente' meaning '5'. For a phone to be pentaband it has to support 5 bands. If the phone has AWS support, it doesn't automatically mean that it is pentaband. The reason Wind and Mobilicity users like pentaband phones is because the reverse is true. We're not the only ones who like pentaband phones though, so please stop referring to phones that work on Wind and Mobilicity as pentaband. It causes unnecessary cofusion.

Ever considered how long they've been in business for?

Canada has had cellular service for a long time. That's not the issue either. Canada protects wireless companies against foreign involvement, so there's no outside competition. Rogers, Bell and Telus combined are gnats compared to Orange, Vodafone and Three individually.

I'd be very interested to know what the expansion plans are for Calgary. It's pretty good overall in the city I find.

It would be nice if they would have coverage along Highway 2 between Calgary and Edmonton. WIND has said they're going to do that for a while, but nothing yet.

Did they say anything about new cities? I find it funny that WIND can expand into all these new markets, yet Mobilicity is still in the same 5. Probably because they don't have an Egyptian company backing them up. Hopefully soon they can expand. When they started, they had a license to operate in 10 cities.

    Hmm...

I remember Dave saying a while back they were looking into visual voicemail.

    Any word on this?

I could be wrong but I think Android ICS has native visual VM capability even for those not using Google Voice.

I doubt anything will happen, the only thing they've changed since launch is opening up a few ports for data and their pricing.
