Meeting with Mobilicity Execs - Upcoming: Expansions, Femto and more!!

Ok, so there is a lot to cover. My meeting was very short (30 mins maybe), because I would miss the last bus if I didnt leave. But I got most of it covered for you guys!!

    1. Expansion: TOMORROW the press release goes out! But here is a scoop:

    i. GTA: Oakville, Burlington, Hamilton and beyond. On the East: Oshawa, Pickering, Whitby, Ajax. I forgot what else was there.
ii. Ottawa: Barrhaven, Kanata and some other areas I forgot.
iii. Edmonton: Ft. Saskatchewan, Sherwood Park, Leduc, Airport, Terwelligar / Windermere and North of St. Albert
    iii. Calgary: Didnt ask
iv Vancover: White Rock and east and boundary bay. I am not too familiar with vancouver map, so wait till tomorrow!

Well, these towers have been planned, and I guess the expansion starts soon!

    2. Femtocell: Testing now, coming End Aug / Early September! Bonus: Signal boosters!

    3. EU/Asia Roaming: Direct agreements / cheaper rates coming end summer!

    4. 21Mbps HSPA+:

    i. Towers have been upgraded, backend upgraded. Some work still remains on the gateway / backend pipes. Mobilicity is also working on getting their own IPs instead of using Allstream IPs.

ii. A gateway has been placed in vancouver, but the hardware isnt ready yet. Its being worked on!

    iii. Tiered Data plans: IMPORTANT!!

The 21 Mbps plans wont be throttled like what they do presently. https will be fully freed. Bittorrent will be fully OPEN!! However, usage caps like wind will be implemented. By caps I mean 21 Mbps till xx GB then throttled. Example: $10 for 100 MB / 15 mins (present system) or $30 for 20 GB or 30 GB unthrottled etc etc. I was told that the plan wasnt made yet, but the throttle caps will be huge, and bittorrent will be open.

More to come after I eat and take some rest!

Thanks for the info. Good to know Mobilicity is well alive :-) Will wait and see. Not confident enough to put my both lines on it yet.

    Good news about the data.

Sad news that they apparently said nothing about changing pricing.
The word 'Pentaband' means '5 Bands', from the Greek word 'pente' meaning '5'. For a phone to be pentaband it has to support 5 bands. If the phone has AWS support, it doesn't automatically mean that it is pentaband.

Don't send me PMs for questions that can be asked publicly.

They wont change pricing. For people who need to use extra data and bittorrent etc heavily without the 100MB/15 minute throttle, they will introduce extra plans to pay more, but get more unthrottled data. It seems like a good move to me. People do abuse the network, but many people would like to pay more for a better service.

Oh btw, the lowest of their top 100 data abusers on the network does 2 GB/night. The topmost does >>100GB/month. They figured out that instead of asking these customers to leave, they can ask them to pay more, but use unthrottled data. There is even a talk about unthrottled unlimited 21 Mbps data plan. The 21Mbps speed puts strain on their network, and they also have to find a way to raise money.

Oh, Femto details: It will be beginning September when they will release it to us. I would need one for my office, so when I get one, I will do a review for you. I have no idea on the price.

Did they give you a estimate price for the femtocells?

Also, what sort of data and cap would existing users get? ex. users with $40 / $35 F&F plans.

Price on Femtocells: No, I didnt ask.

Cap for existing users: Will remain unchanged at 100MB/15 mins. In fact, the existing plan will be called "basic data" and will remain the same. It will get 21Mbps speeds. The newer plans just have a bigger unthrottled cap. (for people who need more unthrottled data)

In the Vancouver case a bunch of White Rock towers have already been active for quite some time

Will have to keep my fingers crossed for the announcement I guess.

Rates something like Wind's new European roaming option?

Isn't HSPA+ and the higher speeds actually bringing higher capacity to their towers - more effective use of their existing bandwidth? (Need to upgrade the backbone, but that's a separate issue). Unthrottled up to a cap sounds like a good way to go to me - unthrottled unlimited would seem likely to kill the network even if just a few users are doing it (unless there happens to be otherwise unused tower capacity at the time).

    Anything on wifi calling?

Not if it is charged that way.. like $60 or more.

Dont know about UMA, I was so excited with the expansion and femto... haha. I will ask them.

The cheapest level at which Shaw offers unlimited data in Calgary is $130 = $80 (Broadband 100) + $50 (unlimited data addon). On a cable system it would seem to be a lot less expensive to deal with (and also less likely to negatively impact other customers) than on a cell system in which that last-mile infrastructure is always shared.

Expanded coverage is obviously great, but I feel like the data move is incredibly stupid. So newer plans would be including a much better data add-on? And for those of us who have the "basic" data-add on with our current plans we have to get the add-on for the better data plan? Hopefully I am interpreting this wrong...

Yes you are interpreting it wrong. The basic plan is the one which is $10 or included in FnF / BTS $45 etc etc. This is the one which the new plans will have as well.

There will be additional data plans which gives you more unthrottled data. Think of these like "data packs" or "unthrottled data bundles" . You buy them if you need ADDITIONAL unthrottled data.
