Hi there
I'm moving to New York City from Canada and after some reading here I'm interested in the $30/month 100mins/unlimited text/5gb data plan from T-mobile.
I just have a question about data roaming. From what People have mentioned here, it's not included? What entails data roaming? If I leave NYC will I not have access to data or does it mean if I leave the country?
Also a side question, I'm interested in the Galaxy S3, if I buy an AWS band unlocked SGS3 from Canada, will it work on T-mobile if I just buy their sim?
Thanks!
no data roaming means you can use data anywhere in the US where the native T-mobile network is available, but not otherwise. Generally this means that you will be fine in any big city in the US and many smaller ones. So you could use data in Seattle or Atlanta for example, but you might be out of luck in more rural areas, especially off the major highways.
Also you probably already know but, texting only includes texting within the US, so if you want to text back to Canada you should use something like google voice or line2
Oh, and welcome to the "Canadians living in the US for the job opportunities" club.

The specific coverage maps for prepaid show "data partner roaming".

You can only data Rome on postpaid.
Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.3.4; en-us; SCH-R720 Build/GINGERBREAD) AppleWebKit/533.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/533.1)
This is an open question that has yet to be resolved. The web page that includes the international rates, states data is not available when roaming with a prepaid plan. However, the prepaid coverage maps clearly indicate both voice AND data coverage when roaming in Canada.
T-Mobile since July 2005.
Data does not work on prepaid while roaming. Voice plans support voice and SMS only. Prepaid data SIMs will not even register to the roamer network.
GSM: SaskTel Canada (postpaid voice + data), Rogers Canada (postpaid data), T-Mobile US, AT&T US, Red Pocket Mobile US, Orange UK, 3 UK, Swisscom Mobile Switzerland, tele.ring Austria, airBalticcard (Estonia)
CDMA: PagePlus US
GSM phones: iPhone 4, iPhone 3G, Nokia Nuron (AWS 3G), Otech F1 (quad-SIM 2G GSM), Nokia E63, Sony-Ericsson K610i, Sony-Ericsson Z310i. All unlocked.
T-Mo just updated their coverage maps within the last week or so. For "4G/3G Smartphone". it shows no roaming. For "2G/Voice", it does show "Service Partner" coverage. I would take that to mean you should at least get 2G while roaming, but who knows...
