I did the same thing with my wife's IPhone and had no porting problems. I ported my number to Google voice and they don't seem to want to let it go.

Has anyone run a ST phone in parallel with another phone to test the service.... then port the number near the end of the first 30 days?
If so, did you have any problem porting the number?
I'm currently running a test of ST compared to my VZW service. So far, so good. Since I'm running in parallel, I did not port when I set up the ST phone. When I decide to drop my other carrier, can I port my old number over to my ST phone without issue?

Yup, you will just need a new sim.

This is a cdma phone (Galaxy Proclaim)... no sim. But glad to know that I can port after the fact. I'll do it on the last day of the 30 day life. So do I just go though the website as a new activation and chose to port there? Or will I have to involve customer service?
I'm also planning to add a 3rd line at that point so that all 3 lines will be on the same expiration date... and will go with a 3 month card for all 3 lines.
Since you were not changing the underlying carrier, Straight Talk with a Verizon-based phone would give the same coverage as a phone issued directly by Verizon except that there would be no roaming. People usually do a test drive if they are changing underlying carriers when they switch to Straight Talk.

if is possible you could shoot yourself in the foot running the port up to the last second of service. just saying...
How so? What is the pitfall of porting later vs porting immediately when you get the phone?
your number should be active i.e. paid for long enough to allow for problems and issues not in your control until port completes. of course that's just old worry wort me.
To update this thread, I ended up porting both phones about a week before the 30 days of service ended, assuming I'd lose the week.
To my surprise, ST ported me with no issues and kept my original 30 day service date, so I didn't lose any service days. I ported another phone via the website about a week later with no issues. But the two existing phones had to be ported with ST customer service since they were already activated in the ST network and were running in parallel to the old service from which the numbers were finally ported from.
While my phone ported within minutes, the 2nd phone was not fully ported until the next day. The 2nd phone was usable, but the online info regarding the new service added was not available until the next day on that phone.
