T-Mobile $2/day activation

I will be heading down to the US this week, and would like to activate a T-Mobile SIM, on the $2/day plan.

Does activation on T-Mobile prepaid require a T-Mobile branded phone? Or will the Prepaid SIM activation kit be sufficient?

If I can get the activation kit ahead of time, would I be able to activate online, prior to leaving for the US?

Or an unlocked GSM phone.

Best to have a t-mo phone, though. Not all GSM phones have all frequencies.

It will ask you for your phone's IMEI but it doesn't have to be a Tmobile one. You can do it online before going, yes.
