I hope you're right ben. I'd hate it if minutes counted towards data. I figured VoLTE was going to count as normal minutes but I wasn't sure.

I am sure when the time comes that voice calls will use data, Verizon will still have plans with minutes that they have done the math to make sure they can still profit accordingly.

Besides, I am sure they will reduce the quality so much, it only will benefit them.

Ok. Voice calls today use DATA, they used to charge by the minute. They just run on different frequencies/technology than LTE (700 in the case of VZW). It's just a matter of billing.

If you look at the new plans, anything w/ a smartphone has no concept of minutes or SMS anymore--it's all "unlimited". The only plan w/ any minutes is a $40/700 min ONLY, no SMS, no data. If you want data it's $200/GB. So looking at prepaid, anyone would be stoned to choose that plan, and that is how VZW wants it. OK if you are strictly M2M I can get it, but that means no data usage.

In any case, once the implement VoLTE (it will be done as VOIP btw--but it doesn't matter) they will shift that traffic to LTE and then they can reclaim the old RTT frequencies and eventually the 3G frequencies (refarming) and then deploy them as data services which BTW are many times more spectrally efficient than the 2G/3G today (meaning they can carry more data over the same spectrum), lowering their cost they won't pass to you.

Once that is accomplished, there is nothing preventing them from charging you for that data, and I am assuming that they would attack SMS/MMS first because you could say deploy data over MMS pretty easily. Then voice, well they could always just charge it in the "phone" fee as it really has become a low cost item so what's the difference, or they could charge you by the byte because data is data after all.

I'm assuming you know how companies never give anything for free when they are in a oligopoly position? That would clash with human nature. So I don't expect any miracles.

In any case for now I have avoided the mess by moving to prepaid, and I hope that market stays vibrant.

I believe Verizon is going to there new unlimited Talk & text and tiered data plans to prevent exactly what unlimited Data Customers like myself are already doing. I am on the old 450 min $39.95 + unlimited $29.95 data plan but get a 25% plan & 20% data corporate discount. Som y actual cost after my discounts is $29.95 +$23.99 for a total monthly cost of $54.94 + taxes of about $6.00 for a grand total of $60.94.
What I do though is run Google Voice & GrooveIp so when ever I am within WiFi or 4g coverage I have virtually unlimited calling and Free texting. I barely use 1/2 of my allotted Plan minutes every month even though I talk on my phone a lot more . I also run CsipSimple on my phone so I can use my home VOIP provider at no additional cost in place of Google Voice over data only. With 4g soon to be just about everywhere I see cellphone coverage to be only secondary to my Voip/Data calling and if I could I would likely just purchase data only but not at the new Verizon tiered rates.
So my point is that I am just the type of customer that Verizon wants to eliminate as I just want unlimited data and not so much cell service. For now I feel like I am gaming there plan for at least the next 2 yrs since I just renewed but eventually feel they will catch up to me and find a way to get rid of me since I do not fit there profit model.
