And I did my most recent upgrade last month and was able to keep the $20 discount as well.

I think someone is spreading the wrong information about losing discounts. Verizon did say to me all discounts and promos stay on the account. I believe what someone here meant to say is they arent offering any new promos. Worst case scenario retentions or inactive pricing are almost always able to get them back for you.

    Completely wrong.

So, if you had a time-limited (1yr, 2yr, etc) promotional discount, you can extend it?

Possibly there are similar, but still subtally different, $20 promotions. I thought the $20 talk&text discount promotion was for only 1 year, but for many people, Verizon "forgot" to stop applying the discount when the time was up.

Nope. The Talk, Text and Data discount was a "permanent" discount. In their computers it has an expiration date of 2038. Some thought that the discount would only last for a year because Verizon required a one-year contract extension to sign up for it. Around December of 2010 or January of 2011, Verizon came out with a $10 discount towards the unlimited data plan, but that one was a "temporary" discount that would only be for one year.

IIRC that was the "smartphones talk free" deal?

I thought the "smartphones talk free" deal was a $10 discount (to cover the $10 per month line cost per line in a family plan)? The Talk, Text and Data discount was a $20 discount per line. The requirement was that, for a family share plan, you had to have the 1400 minute voice plan plus the unlimited text family feature, plus unlimited data on all lines in the family share plan. You could increase your minutes to 2000 and still keep the discount, but the moment you drop your minutes below 1400, drop the unlimited text feature, or drop any of the unlimited data plans on any of the lines, then you would lose the discount on all lines.

So the pricing worked out thusly:

    $70 (1400 minute family share)
$30 (unlimited text feature for all lines in family share)
    $50 ($10 per line x 5 lines)
$150 ($30 per line for unlimited data x 5 lines)
    ($100) ($20 discount per line x 5 lines)
    ------
$200 for 1400 minutes, unlimited text and unlimited data for 5 lines

What about the $10 talk free promotion from November 2010 til early January 2011? I got in right before it ended. The advertised it as add a line for free, but when you went in the store they needed the $10 to have the line exist, so explained that the promo actually takes $10 off data. I have that promo on my account right now. The original reciept from January 2011 shows it as a 24 month promo. Personally I'm hoping it goes longer than that. If they try to take it away from me this january retentions will have the option to give it back to me, or lose a customer.

I had same message as the OP, but when I chose "next", it let me re-add my $50 family share plan and one $9.99 line access fee, so I was back to normal. Only thing I lost was my unlimited data.

Try the former price plan team and see if you can get it back

Call customer service. I did for my GS3 upgrade right before the axe fell on subsidized unlimited, and then called CS again when the phone was delivered to activate it. The rep said it was a good thing I used CS because the system has been nuking a lot of unlimited plans and then people have to call to get it manually reinstated which apparently takes supervisory approval.

Yes you can. You can activate any smartphone on your account without losing unlimited data.

    One more clarification, please.

My unlimited data is currently 3g. I have never had a 4g device on my account. Will I be able to have unlimited 4g in January if I buy my device at full price?

    Thanks!

Every indication would say, "Yes". However, nobody can say for certain that it will be the same in January. My crystal ball isn't working right now.
