Confused Re Iphone 4 compatibility/Straight Talk Worthiness

    Hello,

My Wife and I currently have a verizon iphone 4 8GB on verizon. we both have the same phone with unlimited data() on each along with 1700 min shared and 500 txts for 189 / after taxes/discounts.

Since we got them in January of 2013 for 150 for both, does it pay to sell them for 230 each($460 profit) pay a cancel fee of verizon (750(ETF) - 120(jan till june less ETF) - 460 sell phones) = 170 bucks net and switch to straight talk and buy cheaper android phones(for 300 dollars) for our bill to go from 189 > 94?

We live in ny area(manhattan/queens) and wanted to know how it is.

Also would my iphone 4 be able to be *hacked to work or since not gsm no point and just sell it.

    Thanks in advance,
    wpix

You gonna get different answers to this. If where you live works for att I would so dump that contract. Sell those phones pay the fines and never look back.

The Verizon iphone is CDMA. I am not sure about it being able to be hacked to work with GSM. Does the verizon version even have a SIM slot?

IMO I would sell or trade those for AT&T versions and dispense with the hassle.. I also notice you are in NY, it seems most NY AT&T areas are saturated and if you're getting spotty service with AT&T, the same will be on ST.

As clockcycle says, you may have problems in midtown (with any carrier, though - how many people on the street don't have a phone glued to their faces). Queens? You should get pretty solid coverage. It's really difficult to tell, since AT&T just paints all 5 boroughs as solid, which is nonsense - there are little dead spots all over the place.

But AT&T coverage - at this time - is no worse than Verizon's. And that switches back and forth as the load changes. Get 20 people using one carrier on one corner and none of them has good coverage - while the people mid-block, hitting a different cell face, have solid coverage.

So I wouldn't worry about coverage. It's not like AT&T is going to ignore one of its largest markets for very long. (No carrier will.)

As far as the numbers, you have to decide that for yourself. Will you really get that much for your phones? Is it worth it to you to take whatever monetary hit you take?

Something you can do: Get a really cheap old AT&T feature phone. (Go into any independent cellphone store and see if they'll lend you a phone for a week, or sell you one for $10.) Buy an ST AT&T SIM (the BYOD deal). Buy one month of service with ST. See what the service is like in the areas you need coverage. (Don't forget your office, the back of the supermarket, your basement, etc.) Worst case? You lost $70 because AT&T sucks for you. (Or $60 if the dealer will lend you the phone.)

Could OP not also put those Verizon iPhones on Page Plus at $55 per month? Or does the iPhone 4 not work on PP? I know there are lots of iphones on there...

You'll run into a lot less problems using an AT&T iphone on ST. My advice would be to go that route.

Unfortunately, I don't think you can reprogram the iPhone 4 to work on GSM like you can the 4S (which has both CDMA and GSM radios in it).

The iPhone 4 will work on PP. GSM is out of the question though - the VZW iPhone 4 doesn't even have a SIM slot

the gevey sim will "hack" the phone to work for att, even for cdma iphones. there were a few posts on this, but if you have the latest iOS software then the gevey sim trick may not work. this is very simple, just google this.
once again ATT coverage in NYC is notorious, so, Pageplus might be an option, if they take the iphones.

But the OP is talking about the iPhone 4, not the 4S. The CDMA iPhone 4 doesn't even have a SIM slot.
