If I Buy a ST BYOD SIM Tmobile Version Will it Roam to AT&T?

    The title says it.

I have heard that the Straight Talk SIMs will roam to the other GSM carrier if the one associated with the SIM is not available.

If that is correct, I think it would then be the only prepaid SIM to roam.

Yes, it'll 'roam' on any network that ST has an agreement with. It will however only be for voice and texts. It'll also only happen when you get absolutely no Tmobile towers around to connect to.

In some ways you're right, it seems as if it's prepaid roaming, but it isn't. ST has made agreements with the two main GSM carriers, Tmo and ATT, and some of the regional ones too. Since there is not technically any 'native' network for ST, none of it is roaming, all of it is normal access for it.

None of that matters really since you basically get the largest network to use of anyone all while on prepaid.

Wouldn't it roam to ATT for data, but only receive 2g?

No, not necessarily. So far I'm pretty happy on the ATT side. I don't think my Inspire would work for TMobile flavored ST, from what I've read. When I break THIS phone, well, who knows!

Yes, the AT&T and T-Mobile SIMs "roam" on each other when the native carrier is not available.

"Roam" doesn't really apply with Straight Talk as the parent company (America Movil) has extensive roaming agreements with all of the big providers and many smaller/regional ones as well. Thus, they are all considered "HOME" network coverage regardless of which one you happen to be on.

Would they terminate people for "roaming" excessively?

A family member of mine are RV ing and have been consistently roaming for two weeks in New Mexico.

Gate115, worst case they'll get a warning. Then it's time for them to call customer service and explain that it's a 2 week vacation. I've never heard of ST cutting an account without at least one warning. And 2 weeks may not even trigger that.

I have seen my device say "Roam" so you will know when your roaming. Although that could be different on any devixe . Originally on stock GB on my Samsung Infuse, my phone said "home" and then quickly once "roam".. BUT now that I flashed my Samsung Infuse to ICS, its says "att" , so in the future , I might be able to see what provider I will be roaming on as well

Just be careful: From what I remember reading on other posts here, several users with ST T-Mobile SIMs reported that their phones have, starting a few weeks ago, stopped roaming on AT&T in areas where they previously did successfully roam on AT&T. So far this does not appear to be the case in the other direction (AT&T ST SIMs seem to still not have a problem roaming on T-Mobile, at least not yet anyway).

So long as your usage is consistent with your usual pattern I doubt it. If you think you can hop off AT&T and jump on T-Mo somewhere and use 20GB of data without raising a flag, you may be in for a surprise.

Like I said, T-Mobile is actually cheaper than AT&T, hence why (from anecdotal evidence) folks generally get by using more data on the T-Mobile side before being flagged. Doesn't mean you can go hog wild, of course, and it's all anecdotal as is most with Straight Talk.

If you think you can hop off AT&T and jump on T-Mo somewhere and get data at all, you may be in for a surprise. You can "roam" (I know, it's not roaming) from AT&T to T-Mobile for voice and text, you can't for data. (Even if your phone can do T-Mobile's data bands, ST phones with AT&T SIMs don't do data on T-Mobile towers or vice-versa.)

Not true. AT&T BYOD SIM roams all over my area on T-Mobile WITH data (EDGE) access. Always has. In some areas it is voice/text only but I have not experienced that yet.
