I havent tried to do any tethering yet, but it would be useful at time for road trips or otherwise. Is it as simple as connecting the phone to USB? Or can it be done wirelessly? Hopefully I dont have to root...

I've never tethered on any carrier or even had cellular data, but I do follow tech news quite heavily. My understanding from that is that carriers like Verizon and AT&T require the customer to pay an additional fee in order to tether in an authorized fashion. I don't know if Page Plus has a way to do that, but my guess is they don't. If they don't, then your only option would be to root and do unauthorized tethering. The problem with doing that is that Verizon as the underlying carrier is able to use detect unauthorized tethering (user agent strings, TTL, and other clues). If Verizon does do that, then they may try to stop your unauthorized tethering somehow.
Tethering can be done over USB, WiFi, and I think also Bluetooth.

Looks like I have to be rooted to tether. Hmm. Ive got Gingerbread 2.3.4. I think I heard that you cannot root after a gingerbread update? The phone came with 2.2 Froyo. If I do a factory reset, would it return to 2.2? Not sure I want to jump through all these hoops just to tether.

You can root after the update, by downgrading your phone to an earlier version with rsd lite, however you don't need root to tether via usb. There is an app called tether by koush that works great, as well as pdanet. Both work very well.
