Virgin Mobile iPhone unlock SIM thread

Nice! I am considering on jumping ship as well. The only thing is, I am finding conflicting reports on whether the phone itself CAN be unlocked for use with GSM providers outside of USA or not. I travel alot! If this is a no-go, then it's not a good deal for me.

    Anyone?

Yes, I too am interested in whether Virgin Mobile will unlock the sim card slot so it can be used outside the USA when I'm traveling. They SHOULD, since it's being sold at the unsubsidized price, and I can't imagine why they wouldn't want to, given that their parent company Sprint unlocks it after 1 month and Virgin Mobile is not offering any competing service that would use the sim card slot for overseas travel.

But everything that I've heard so far either says nothing, or that it isn't allowed.

Yes, they should unlock it for sure let's hope they do.

It would be best to call (888) 322-1122 or tweet @VMUcare and ask that question.

Since VM doesn't offer any roaming, let alone foreign roaming, there's no logical reason to deny the foreign GSM carrier unlock. You might be the first person ever to contact them and ask that, so be prepared for the reps to have no information about it yet and/or VM USA customer service's specialty: "10 different answers from 10 different reps".

also, where did the notion that the SIM tray is locked come from? why would it be any different from the Sprint iPhone 4S? the tray on the Verizon and Sprint version is only for going abroad anyway...

im curious as to where this locked world SIM tray idea came from.

There are many ways to "unlock" the 4s. Look into the Gevey.

Thanks Ziddey, Gevey is a great idea! Almost forgot about that! But still, I'd prefer having a factory unlocked unit over that. Guess we will have to wait for a few days until the dust clears.

Btw, which gevey should I get? The Gevey Ultra S for CDMA?

Looks really nice.. I'm tempted to get one but I'm going to wait to see about unlocking the 4S to use with SIM cards. As it's already been mentioned, I don't see why not considering the $650 price tag.

is it possible to use VM Iphone 4s as world phone?

I would like to buy a VM Iphone but I want to know if it's possible to unlock the sim to use internationally. It would justify the price of paying $700 +

anyone here buy their Iphone from Bestbuy? I see they are giving 18 months no interest when buying from them. can you buy warranty from bestbuy or does it have to be applecare?

thanks. Just want to know all this before I buy one. I've been waiting for a Iphone and the monthly plan is looking great.

Can you clarify the difference between the two? If I've got it right, the Gevey unlock makes the phone workable with any GSM carrier, domestic or foreign while having VM unlock the phone only makes is work with foreign GSM carriers. Is that a correct understanding?

With the Gevey unlock you put the SIM in, it does its thing, then you can remove it and use any other SIM card? Yes/No? I checked out the Gevey website but it's not very informative.

Technically the spec seems to show it is a worldphone. Dunno if VM sell it unlocked though re the SIM.

According to VM's Facebook reps, the phone is only for use in the US and will not have an unlocked SIM for international use. You may want to contact them directly for confirmation, though.
