Hi, I am leaving Canada to Brazil for 6 weeks and want to get a local SIM card for my iphone 4S for - which is currently locked to Fido in Canada. Can I unlock the phone and use abroad, then simply re-insert my FIDO SIM card when I return to Canada and continue as before? If not, what happens? Any info is much appreciated, thanks!

How r u going to unlock it? gevey sim? Fido?
Rogers: 250DT/8pm, CID, 100CdnLD, 100textoutgoing, 100mb=15+grrf+taxes
Fido/Rogers can unlock the iPhone for $50 if there's no agreement tied to the phone.
I don't know how many times it has to be said...
Fido will only unlock a phone if one of the following conditions is met
1) if it is bought at full price and used on the network for 30 days
2) if the phone is taken under subsidy the term has to have passed. If you bought a "ImaginaryPhone" in 2012, on a 3 year term, it wouldn't be available for unlock until 201
Edit: also the phone had to be on the original contracted line. Eg: if you buy a 5 year old phone that is locked to Fido you won't be able to unlock it because it's not on it's original account.
If you meet one of those criteria and have $50 then Fido will unlock your phone.
For the OP: If you bought your iPhone on contract... You won't be able to use it in Brazil with a local SIM Card
My Plan
----------
$50 Unlimited Local & L.D. to N.A. +Unlimited SMS to N.A.
$50 Unlimited Data (Grandfathered 2005)
$10 iPhone VVM/CID/WC
-$10 Credits
Dont really care how many times u said, but did OP ask how to unlock the 4S?
He can use gevey sim to unlock the phone and use it in Brazil with local sim cardFor the OP: If you bought your iPhone on contract... You won't be able to use it in Brazil with a local SIM Card
Be aware however that if you get a phone, the agreement expires, but during that time you had to get the phone replaced by the manufacturer (apple) under warranty, you're screwed. Fido won't help because it's not the original phone they sent out. Apple won't help because they don't deal with unlocking issues.
Crap is what it is!
I've never once had a problem with it, and I've had the issue come up several times. I just tell the unlocking team rep that the original IMEI got exchanged for the new one, give the date when the CX started using it, and they've always taken the call and unlocked the handset.
I was at Apple yesterday, and the rep told me that this is a non issue. I just have to get Fido to unlock the ORIGINAL imei given out by fido, and apple keeps track of warrantee exchanges and will unlock the actual phone that I have.
This sounds wonderful. A bit too wonderful actually.
Any experience?
Good luck with that. Most likely you are in a contract and will be asked to pay your ECF/DECF which could be $490 or more and then $50 unlock fee on top of that.
