The Proclaim is like what, $180?, so to save $20 a month it would take you like 9 monthes just to start saving that. Also I think for only 20 more a month Verizon roaming and unlimited data is more than worth it. I think the BYOD is a way better deal on AT&T with roaming if you can get that service. I use a iPhone 4s on Straight Talk and love it.
Edit: Unless you sell your current phone to make that difference up, my bad.

$45/month unlimited talk/text/web browsing for the ST on VZW native coverage network. I think with ATT you also get roaming. Compared to VZW at $65/month, there's your $20 savings. It may be more than that if $65 doesn't include all the fees and extra charges my post paid plan used to include. That's one reason I moved to ST from VZW. But I had no discounts so my minimum cost for 3 lines in the minimum family share plan was $110... plus ~$17 in taxes, fees, and surcharges each month. ST only costs me about $2.50 more per line per month for unlimited everything, even including sales tax on the plans (90 day service plans).

Most likely Verizon will follow AT&T lead...warn you after using X amount of data then throttle you thr remainder of the month.

You get great coverage just on the verizon network. I think if you live in the upper mid west you could see a difference.

It only uses its own cell towers for service. Will not work on another CDMA network.

Verizon's network is so extensive. At least where 've used it. What other CDMA network would have coverage where Verizon doesn't ?

Yes, if you use ST branded phones, they say no roaming. You are usually locked to the carrier which is tied to that phone. See these coverage maps. See how the "Android" map looks especially sparse? It's because the Straight Talk-branded Androids are tied to one particular carrier, and there's access to other carriers' towers.

Q: What is Roaming?
A: Roaming occurs when a subscriber of one wireless service provider uses the facilities of another wireless service provider. Your Straight Talk phone will not roam.
However, IF you use the Straight Talk BYOD program, with sim card GSM AT&T/T-Mobile compatible phones there IS roaming* (I'll explain in a minute) The ST BYOD plan has different conditions, even a different coverage map. It's almost like a separate division of the company.They even have their own different URL.

You bring the phone YOU want to use, like I have a very-Android Galaxy Nexus. Some people are using the recently released Android (Jelly Bean 4.1) Samsung Galaxy S III. Some are using the Apple iPhone 4S. Those are not sold by Straight Talk, but the BYOD program is different from regular Straight Talk and gives you true nationwide coverage.
* While you aren't leaving the "Straight Talk" network, you are actually using both AT&T and T-Mobile towers, as well as smaller regional carriers, even for Androids -- which is totally different coverage from the Straight Talk branded Androids. So, it's "roaming" in that your phone is not tied to one specific carrier like some of the Straight Talk branded phones.

US Cellular is probably the main CDMA carrier that has coverage where VZW doesn't and I imagine there are probably some smaller lesser known regional CDMA carriers. Hellyon gave a good example of Alaska Communications.

When you click the prepaid button and refresh, you see the prepaid area and also an area labeled prepaid roaming. My understanding is that the VZW prepaid plans do not include the roaming areas, but I may be wrong about that. IAC, you are correct, the coverage is excellent for the most part.
Having the opportunity to get an ST Android with VZW native coverage sold me... coming from VZW proper.
That being said, post 25 above is very interesting. I don't pretend to understand how all this works such that you can bring your own device and make that coverage work. I've been in VZW's cdma so long I don't know how anything else (GSM/sim) works.
