I know from experience that the Galaxy SII does not block tethering. We used it last night for some impromptu browsing, just go to the connections settings and turn it on. No fuss, no muss.

When I take by son back to college, the hotel I stay at has unsecured wifi for it's guests. I am able to go on the broad internet, but my company's VPN system will not allow me to log into their secure network. My workaround has been to use my Mesmerize as a hotspot, and I've been able to log into the VPN that way.
I understand the newer Android phones have software added that do not allow tethering without signing up for a tethering plan. I only need the tethering capability a few times per year, and only for short durations at a time, so I don't want to spend the extra money for a long-term tethering plan. Which of the current Android phones block the tethering capability that my Mesmerize has? And of those that do block, is there a workaround for short-duration tethering?

but will you still get the message on your phone saying you can enjoy a day of hot spot but you need to stop in and pick out a plan after that? or is that the blocking they OP was referring to
hardees rules.
My gsIII says enjoy 3 days of WiFi hotspot. We will see what happens after 3 days.

The Electrify should allow it as well. Mine does, and I didn't get mine til it had been out for over a month.

All 4G capable phones will allow you to tether at no cost for 72 hours. After that a tethering package is automatically added to your account. You can always call CS and remove the tethering package. Loanranger, under the scenario you described the new setup should work fine for you. US Cell just wants you to pay for tethering if your going to use it. When your need for tethering is finished just call CS and remove the package. -rwc
Just root, problem solved.

I couldn't imagine having to use and rely on a stock Android phone. I even just got the HTC Evo 4G LTE on Sprint and I barely made it 3 days before I had to root and install a custom rom. There is nothing wrong with Android, so why do manufacturers keep messing with it and making it terrible?
Terrible = city search, daily perks. I was glad the s3 does not have them on it.
Download FoxFi. No root necessary!
Which version of foxfi are you running, and do you have the add-on installed?
