MMS doesn't work with mobile data off. And I currently use Data ON-OFF by Antonio La Rocca. I've also used 3G Watchdog.

This is my first smartphone and I'm not tech savvy. I've done alot reading here but most of it I don't understand.LOL.. I'm signed up for autopay on the 1200 plan. I won't be using much data since I use my computer for most everything. I don't have wifi at home yet but I will and I think I read that I could use it on the phone and save my data plan so I won't go over when I do use the phone. So how do I turn off data use on the phone when I'm not using it,and if I turn it off, will I still be able to send and receive pictures? I really want to be able to do this.
What do I need to install or uninstall to get the best use of the phone. If there's anything else you need to tell me do,just go ahead. Explain it to me in plain english please.LOL..

Zapjb is correct, MMS (sending / receiving pictures) requires data be turned on. The program he mentioned (Data ON-OFF) is an excellent one button way to control it. There are more sophisticated programs like Droidwall that will allow you to turn WIFI and/or 3G on or off for each individual program but I think the simple all on/all off approach is much better for most users.
If you send/receive a lot of pictures (MMS), it can be difficult to keep data usage down. There are programs like location services, weather, and general operating system functions that use small amounts of data periodically. It is very easy to burn through the monthly 10MB on the 12 plan with just "background usage" even if you don't receive many MMS messages. It's a real pain trying to manage it. Email is one alternative to sending pictures as that will work fine on WIFI. There are other ways but definitely not ideal solutions.
3G Watchdog is a good program for monitoring usage. Another good one is My Data Manager.
Does the phone have to be rooted for these programs to work?
Thanks. How do I add these apps to my phone. so I can just add (data on and off) and keep it turned off until I want to send or receive a pic. How do I turn off the background usage or can I off so it doesn't use up my data. what is backup assisant?
Data ON-OFF turns off all data. Get from Android Market for free.
You dont need backup assistant if you keep all your contacts in gmail. I used to use backup assistant on verizon, but I dont think it will work through PPC anyway.
I downloaded a power widget bar from the play store. It has a few more power buttons than the stock 5 button widget that comes with Android phones, including a 3G switch which is not on the stock widget. It works great and is much easier than going through settings to turn data on and off.
One thing to note, HTC phones (the incredible 1 at least) automatically turn data on and off if you decide to send or click download on an MMS message. Kinda nice you don't have to manually turn on 3G. I have been dealing with only 100MB data also, and MMS barely uses any data anyway.

Your phone should have an app on it already that says Google Marketplace or Google Play. Basically, you go to play.goggle.com and find the app you want (Data ON-Off for example). There will be an install button that will put it on your phone. Certain apps require rooting but Data On-Off does not.
You can also go to the phone Settings==>Battery & Data Manager==>Data Delivery and turn off data yourself. Background Data can be turned off in the same place. The program Data On-Off just makes it a lot easier.
Backup Assistant is a Verizon app that most people consider "bloatware". When you get further along with customizing your phone you will probably want to remove it.
Just a tip: You mentioned getting WiFi at home. That would be a good idea if you don't want to use data but you do want to download programs to customize your phone. There are other programs besides Data On-Off that would be beneficial. Perhaps you could bump that up on the priority list, or have a friend /relative with WiFi, or could do your app downloading at a free WiFi locations.
