So the real question is, where's all the money going? If it were actually doing something, every AT&T landline subscribers would have GPON fiber and AT&T Mobility's network would be a consistent 5+mbps on HSPA+ everywhere. Neither is true.

With AT&T and Verizon going full steam ahead with LTE deployments, it doesn't surprise me.
http://finance.yahoo.com/blogs/break...121251729.htmlIn total, the top 25 companies invested $136 billion combined last year, the report shows, with half the big spenders coming from the Telecom (IYZ) and Energy (XLE) sectors, as well as a significant contribution from Tech (QQQ) and the Automakers. Financial companies were excluded from the list because they do not publicly report their capital expenditures.

I usually support government regulation, but It is unfortunate that the government over-regulated and killed the AT&T/ T-Mobile Merger
The best explanation of the pricing nutiness in the industry.
Why Sprint and T-Mo will always suck.
The only way to end the pricing insanity is to eliminate contracts and subsidies.
I want Wifi calling on AT&T.
If you text while driving, you're an idiot. End of story.
Well it's going somewhere.

Investments take awhile to bear fruit nor will they be necessarily obvious to us.
The article is fairly vague where the money is going to and can range from installing an underground vault to installing fiber/reclaiming spectrum.
Whether installing an underground vault or installing fiber/reclaiming spectrum, it's all considered an investment. Yes, even desktops or copiers used by AT&T employees is usually included in the figures, if an item contributes to the productivity of AT&T then it will be included in their figures.
I know it seems like a lot of money, but one must look at revenue and the historical data on it's buildout v revenue. For example I'm sure Comcast has invested like cash, but in it's case it wasn't last year. Same thing goes when you compair ATT v Verizon. In that case Verizon has taken the hit by starting before ATT, as ATT should have because of revenue.
It's not just AT&T we have to worry about. VZW has been so LTE crazy (props to them I will admit) that they are neglecting the 3G network. It will still be a lot time before EVDO/3G goes away and VZW 3G is piss slow in most every place, not to mention, in major cities with tons of iPhones.
Having only one year's info is distorting. An average over several years would be more useful. They could have easily shown each of the last five years.
Reporting only one year's data allows PR depts or lobbyists to cherry-pick.
How is verizons lte call quality? Their cdma network has horrible call quality. Sound like you under water.

If they could build cell towers over seas for us, they would do it to save money.

At&t SGS III, LTE
Interesting twist. So like outsourcing towers? Or offshore towers? Seems Mexico would be a cheap place to install them.![]()
Not that I've seen. Their network seems to be pretty fast for EVDO, handles the load fairly well, and it's also on it's way out, as the customers who care are all on LTE anyways.
Yup. That's the part that sucks, since everyone uses CDMA on Verizon.
All I know is my att phone is out performing my 4g vz phone in just about every way. The past week its been a night and day difference.
