Can someone who has one help me decide on purchasing the Zip? How much RAM? How much internal memory (in addition to the microSD)? Can the camera read bar codes?

Signature under construction, expect delays
This phone has, I think ,150MB of memory. The Galaxy Proclaim seems like a better phone for the money.
Ok. I can't do Youtube. So can I do Netflex?
well good to know then. While I don't like everything about Straight Talk, for what I really need, it will work fine.
Why can't you do youtube or netflix? If you only watch a little don't you stay under the hidden cap? Is there something about these phones that you are referring to that prevents playing youtube? I was considering purchasing these phones and thought they were real smartphones and could surf the web like all the other smartphones. Please elaborate, thx!
No you can surf the web like other smartphones. No issues there. It's something about Youtube that is different than just using the web. From some I have read, if you watch Youtube they just turn your phone off or something. Maybe you can watch some and be safe, I don't know. So I am just not gonna watch it until I would find out something different. But all in all I like the phone.
The ST proxy server blocks YouTube and Netflix I think. They work fine when used on wifi. Even though it's against the TOS, you can take a chance and by-pass it by deleting the first proxy server in the APN. Disclaimer: if you use too much data and get throttled, it is sometimes very difficult to get unthrottled.
I bought an LG Enlighten case from Ebay for 6.99. The Zip is the LG Enlighten rebranded for ST. Case fits perfectly.
Amazon has alot of cases.
hello
can anyone help me with an unlock code for the LG OPTIMUS ZIP? Please and thank you =)
I've been using it for a few months, and I have a few observations. For baseline purposes, I mainly use voice, mail, and text. I use the browser to check my own sites (I'm a semi-retired Web developer) and occasionally to access other sites (for example, to find the nearest Taco-Bell last night), but I'm not a heavy mobile Web user. I almost never use it for video, music, etc. except, again, to test these features on my own sites.
First observation: I don't care for the Android. I'd been using BlackBerries for years, so part of it could just be a familiarity issue. But I find the Android's handling of mail to be far inferior to BlackBerry's (except for GMail). Also, the stock POP3 client on the Zip was so horrible that I finally switched to K-9, which is somewhat better, but still not as good as the BlackBerry's.
Second observation: The application storage on the Zip would be inadequate if I actually was into apps. I have very few installed, but am almost at my limit. I don't know offhand what that limit is, but I do know that it would be inadequate if I actually cared about apps.
Third observation: Coverage-wise, I have no complaints. I live and move around in the boondocks in one of the least-populated regions of rural New York, and I more often than not have coverage. I know I have coverage anywhere my friends and relatives who have VZW (prepaid or postpaid) have it. So in that regard I have no complaints at all -- especially considering the price.
Fourth observation: Call quality is good. I sometimes get a slight echo when I first start talking, but it goes away in a few seconds. There may be some sort of echo-canceling technology that kicks in at that point, but I'm only speculating about that.
Fifth observation: The battery life sucks. I consider myself lucky to get through a single day if I actually use the phone that day.
Sixth observation: There may be a bug in ST's billing system. I have noticed that if I purchase a refill card at Wal-Mart, and add it to my account using the ST Web site, the account may fail to renew. It's not a big deal: All I have to do is dial *22890 to re-activate it. But it's an annoyance because the phone will neither send nor receive calls until that's done (although oddly, the data services will still work), and I have to reconfigure the voice mail. This doesn't happen if I refill an existing card online. I have no idea if it would happen if I add a newly-purchased card using the phone itself (rather than doing it online) because I haven't tried it that way. My workaround is to always refill online with a credit card, rather than using a new card.
To summarize and recap: I don't care for the Android and I do wish that ST would offer a BB on VZW's towers. I'd gladly pay the extra ten bucks a month to be able to have even an older-model BB on ST. Also, the app storage on the Zip is meager, but marginally okay if you're like me and don't really give a rat's about apps. The native POP3 client is horrible, but K-9 is a pretty good workaround. Coverage-wise and call-quality-wise I have no complaints, and the refill bug (if that's what it is) can be worked around.
So all in all, if you're looking to be able to make calls, send texts, and make light- to moderate-use of Web and other data apps; if you're not a heavy app user in general; and if you don't mind waiting up to 10 minutes to get your mails (or if you use Gmail exclusively); this probably is a good deal for you at $45.00 / month. It's a good enough deal for me that I keep it. But I'd gladly cough up an extra ten bucks a month to be able to use a BB on their service.
