I recently got AT&T to unlock my iPhone 4 since my contract will expire in a few days. I also purchased a TMO SIM card. When I swap in the TMO SIM card, the CDN menu item appears and I can edit it. Is this new information since I've read that the SIM swap method doesn't work on the iPhone4? Or is the fact that my iPhone 4 is carrier unlocked the difference?

I believe that since AT&T started carrier unlocking a month or so ago, there have been a few who have reported using sim swap on the 4. Before that time, it was reported as 4S only.

Thanks. Does the fact that the Cellular Data Settings menu appears when swapping in the TMO SIM card prove that the SIM swap method will work on my carrier unlocked iPhone 4? I've assumed that this is the important part of the method. Note: I cannot yet complete the method since I'm still under contract with AT&T 'til the 29th of this month.

Well, the whole point of the sim swap is to have the menu come up, so I'd say that you should be fine.

Thanks. That was kind of my assumption, but wasn't sure never having completed the process. Given that AT&T is now unlocking iPhones out of contract this should apply to quite a few others as well. Thanks again.

just order a Tmo micro sim for 4s (hopefully online)? its really that simple? not that I'm afraid of jail breaking, I've done it before, but it would be nice to have a back up plan for those crazy jb breaking iOS updates

and first time poster looking to buy unlocked from apple and going back to ST

Rebooted phone and voice was working right away. The 4G indicator showed up in the status bar, but any attempt to use data would results in a cellular data services not activated error.

The guy at the Apple Store did some research and found that the way to edit the APN settings on the iPhone 4s is with the iPhone Configuration Utility. I was going to post a link to the utility, but this forum software won't let me (not enough posts). Do a search for iPhone Config Utility 3.5 on the Apple support site.

It took a bit of experimentation with mapping the info on the ST card to the Apple iPhone Config Utility. Here is what you'll need:

General (Name, ID, Org, Desc): these can be whatever you want. They are descriptive only.

    APN:
    Access Point Name (APN): att.mvno
Access Point User Name: Straight Talk
    Access Point Password: (blank)
    Proxy Server and Port: proxy.mvno.tracfone.com : 80

That's it. Then just plug in the iPhone via USB, click on it in the device list in the config utility, and tell it to install the config profile.

It was only by cruising threads here that I realized you had to put "Straight Talk" for the AP User Name. It doesn't say that anywhere in the ST documentation.

Note: as far as I know there is no way to config the MMS parameters, so MMS is a no go. This seems to be an iOS issue, and I'm hopeful that Apple will fix it in the future. I personally use SMS and iMessage so it's not a big deal.

Very glad to have a full featured iPhone with good service (data speeds) for $45/month. So long Big Cell!
Hope this helps some others take the leap.
Is the method you described preferred over the unlockit.co.nz trick where you enter the APN settings that way? We sometimes get spotty signal using the unlockit trick. Wondering if you are getting reliable service with the method you described.

I just tried the instructions given by the OP, but I can't get the iPhone Configuration Utility to install the configuration. I click on "install" after I've created the configuration and selected my device, but nothing happens. Am I missing something?
