Picked up a new, fully unlocked 4s at the local Apple Store. We installed the Straight BYOP Micro SIM and activated with the unlimited plan thru the ST website. Rebooted phone and voice was working right away. The 4G indicator showed up in the status bar, but any attempt to use data would results in a cellular data services not activated error.
The guy at the Apple Store did some research and found that the way to edit the APN settings on the iPhone 4s is with the iPhone Configuration Utility. I was going to post a link to the utility, but this forum software won't let me (not enough posts). Do a search for iPhone Config Utility 3.5 on the Apple support site.
It took a bit of experimentation with mapping the info on the ST card to the Apple iPhone Config Utility. Here is what you'll need:
General (Name, ID, Org, Desc): these can be whatever you want. They are descriptive only.
APN:
Access Point Name (APN): att.mvno
Access Point User Name: Straight Talk
Access Point Password: (blank)
Proxy Server and Port: proxy.mvno.tracfone.com : 80
That's it. Then just plug in the iPhone via USB, click on it in the device list in the config utility, and tell it to install the config profile.
It was only by cruising threads here that I realized you had to put "Straight Talk" for the AP User Name. It doesn't say that anywhere in the ST documentation.
Note: as far as I know there is no way to config the MMS parameters, so MMS is a no go. This seems to be an iOS issue, and I'm hopeful that Apple will fix it in the future. I personally use SMS and iMessage so it's not a big deal.
Very glad to have a full featured iPhone with good service (data speeds) for $45/month. So long Big Cell!
Hope this helps some others take the leap.
