Well we traveled thru, Lumberton, Elizabethtown, Tomahawk, Wallace, Chinquapin and finally Beulaville…
Lumberton we had good coverage until we left that town…. We had NO service thru ElizabethTown, Tomahawk, Wallace & Chinquapin, once we got into Beulaville, then svc was restored…
Now i do remember back in 05 when we traveled this same route, i had service but only had service while in the immediate town itself, once we left the town, we lost service until the next town in line…
Now the maps were updated and now they show NO coverage and thats what we got, NOTHING…
    iPhone 4S on AT$T: Unlimited Talk, Text & Web w/NO throttling….
iPhone 4 on Boost Mobile: Talk, text, MMS & 3G Data .. since 6.11.12

If you can't see that todays society has gone to sh*t, then you ARE the problem or PART of the problem…

The phone stores the route that you put in when you had data. It will store the entire route based on the streets that it picked. Once you lose data the surrounding streets and all the other info such as gas stations, fast food places will fall off but you will always have the original route you put on when you had the phone in network.

If you were to leave the route when you were not in a service area it would not be able to recalculate the route but it still would show the original route. Now if you were to turn off your phone or if you just cancel the route while not in a service area you will lose the route completely and not be able to navigate to the destination until you found cell service or wifi again.

I use to do this all the time when traveling through the reservations in Utah and New Mexico. I would load up my route while I had cell service then stick to that route until I got to my destination. Sometimes it was my only means of navigation as I don't carry any actual paper maps with me so I made sure not to lose the route until I got cell service or reached my destination.

Outdated information, map tiles are saved in cache if you want them to be. You can then reuse that data at any time, and it does save on data use. Just open maps and select "make available offline" I've saved 83MB at a clip and had 7-8 areas downloaded too.
