    why no service??????????

I am on vacation in Myrtle Beach SC and have no service. My wife has a regular Verizon Plan and her phone is working fine. I got on chat with PagePlus yesterday and they could not help me or suggest what else to do. Anyone have a good idea? Frustrated,

    George

When was the last time you did a preferred roaming list (PRL) update? The Myrtle Beach market was acquired by Verizon from Alltel so if your phone is several years old, it is possible that it literally does not recognize the network where you are. Next time you are in an area that your phone works, dial *228 and then select option 2.

I will second doing a *228 option 2. I have been using Page Plus for a long time, and used to work in Myrtle Beach and never had any problem with it. Myrtle Beach is certainly an old Alltel market, so it is certainly possible that a new PRL will fix you up.

Last year, I discovered my 6 year-old phone was going bad. I discovered this when I traveled out of state once, my phone worked sporadically. In some places, I could get a signal and in other places, nothing -- mostly nothing. When I could dial *228 option 2, it didn't help. When I got home, the phone worked fine and I started looking into why.

CDMA is a dual frequency system, 850MHz and 1900MHz. Here, in Florida, where Verizon bought a 1900MHz cellular company called PrimeCo, 850MHz is rare, but where I went, 1900 was rare. My phone had lost it's ability to use 850, but not 1900, so when I got home it worked fine.

Thanks for the replys. The "chat" with PagePlus suggested the *228 as well. I tried that yesterday, but I didn't get a signal anywhere, I drove about 20 miles.

I will go further inland today and try again. The explanation makes sense.

    Thanks,

    George

But he has to find an area that his phone recognizes as native Vzw.

Also, the coverage for a regular Verizon plan is greater than the Verizon prepay. And PagePlus is the same as Verizon prepay, right. So maybe he is in an area where there is no PagePlus coverage.

As I understand it, if the phone is in an area where there is Vzw coverage, there will be service, although it could be roaming. As I understand it, the Vzw prepaid coverage area is the native Vzw network. Vzw postpaid also has no roaming charges in the non-native areas, but Vzw prepaid and PPC would have to pay roaming in those areas.

Is there a a map of only the native network? I am wondering if I will have service where I need it most.

Is roaming free on the 55 plan?

I may have messed up. I had Sprint and in the questioned location is was always connected on (free) roaming. I just figured it was roaming to a Verizon tower. ( The only real towers in the area) I didn't realize that the Verizon network was acutally different for the prepaid group.

The PPC coverage map is where you'd expect it to be, on the PPC website. There is no difference in PPC coverage based on plan type.

Map was where it was expected, but it does not differentiate between coverage and and native coverage service? I am trying to determine if the area I will be using the phone in, which shows coverage, is in reality a non native area and thus subjected to roaming charges with Page Plus. Perhaps I am misunderstanding the term " native"? Are you saying that any coverage area shown on the Verizon map will be a non roaming charge area to Page Plus customers?

Ah crud, I am looking at the Verizon coverage maps, not the Page Plus coverage map. It is 4:30am and I am going to bed!
