Using a local SIM is usually the best option....Koodo also has some roaming packs which you can see on their website.

I have the iphone 4 and the older data plan which starts at $5 and bumps up with data used. I plan on keeping the phone basically off until I get back. The other option, of course, is to buy a sim card in the States and replace the Koodo one while I'm there.
Just wondering if any of the kind folks out there who have been in a similar situation have any advice or suggestions?

Data is charged at $5/MB, voice at $1.50/min, and text @ $0.60/message sent or received. The following US add-ons are available:
30-day U.S. Roaming Combo$40/month
Unlimited text messaging, up to 50 US minutes and a preferred US data roaming rate (40˘/MB)
30-day U.S. Unlimited Text $20/month
30-day U.S. Roaming Talk $20/month
Get up to 50 U.S minutes while travelling within the US
If you do decide to use a sim from a local provider, you'll want to make sure the phone is unlocked.
One comment I can make is that I have never been charged for a roaming US text.
I just have the standard $25 100mins/Unlimited messaging/CID/VM plan plus some data. My girlfriend's never been charged either.
I live in the US and t mobile has some decent prepaid options for while you're here, you just won't get 3g on your iPhone. Unless koodo uses the same bands as t mobile

They had a billing error a while back that didnt charge for roaming texts, but they fixed that last year, so you will get charged
If you can handle edge speeds, TMOBILE has 2 dollar a day unlimited voice, SMS (USA numbers only) and data.
Use Google voice to call back to Canada for free.
(Edit: they also have 3G data for 1 dollar more, but T-Mobile uses 1700mhz for 3g, so it won't work for your iPhone. But 2g/edge will.)

I have been using this technique for years. The plans have changed a little but, definitely very beneficial. There's a new 4G service available. FreedomPop is launching an iPhone 4/4S case that has a built in wifi/wimax hotspot. It's $99 and includes 500MB of data per month for free. Additional 1GB at $10. Pre orders ship mid August.
