Except for the SIM cards in the three Nokia smartphones, no SIM card supplied with a phone sold by Straight Talk will work in any other phone.

Recently i replaced my wife's e71 phone with a new ZTE Merit . I used the sim from the e71 for the New Merit for easy activation and to save the numbers. Therefore I have an unactivated sim from the Merit. Can this unactivated sim be used in an ATT byop or would I have to purchase another new sim from ST?

This would be up to you but it might be an option to put the sim back in the merit and put the e71 sim back in the e71 and go to your account in the ST website and transfer or "upgrade" the e71. of course to the merit and it will transfer time and phone number to the merit.
the result is you have a backup e71 for use in the future. the e71 is worthless without its sim.
this has not come up before...yet. what is the sim card number. i do not mean the sim card serial that should be private to you and phone company.
i wonder if the merit is the same type sim as used in the nokias. it might be as quick as you looking or maybe some research on the sim number.
