    T-Mobile Rocket 4G USB

    Hi all,

Found a T-Mobile Rocket 4G USB stick at a pawn shop for 15 bucks.

I'm on the 100 minutes 5GB/4G $30 plan. Can I just insert my sim in it and go?

    Thanks

No, I've heard that any T-Mobile branded device is locked into data or voice service if its a phone. I think its against the TOS to use a phone on the data plan and a modem on a voice plan. There should not be a problem with non T-Mobile GSM devices since I don't think they track them.

Thanks. I'll have to give it a "go" to see what it does. Any T-Mobile branded device "should" work with an active prepaid sim... but I don't know how a T-Mobile data only device will react.

At worst... I'll add it to my device "collection". 15 bucks isn't going to break me.

I'll try it this weekend and report back.

I suspect that if a BroadBand SIM is activated using the laptop stick's IMEI, then the SIM becomes locked to the device and vice versa as someone reported in a thread in this forum. The CSRs he contacted didn't think it should, but were unable to remedy the situation.

I've been using a Rocket 4G that hasn't had it's BroaadBand SIM activated with one of my PayAsYouGo SIMs to tether a desktop version of Opera Mini through whiiich I'm posting.

Yes, I'm using a java emulator with Opera Mini java, Opera Mobile is different from Opera Mini.

I used these instructions with a handler version of OM7:

My Rocket 4G laptop stick IMEI hasn't been used to activate either a BroadBand SIM or a voice SIM and I've been able to get internet access with it using my prepaid voice SIM and Opera Mini. I activated a new voice SIM on the $3 a day plan yesterday using an old flip-phone IMEI, but when I put the SIM in the laptop stick and tried to access any site with either FireFox3.5 or ie6 I was redirected to the my.t-mobile log-in page, which never finished loading enough for the login button to be active - Opera Mini was still working though. I was able to tether Firefox successfully with the newly activated voice SIM inserted in my Nuron.

Thanks. I have still yet to "play" with it. Sounds like there's hope, though.

My ever growing phone collection. Dang... this stuff is addicting...

T-Mobile: Samsung Galaxy S2 (daily driver), Nokia Lumia 710, Blackberry 8820, Blackberry 8810 (unlocked AT&T), Blackberry 8110 (unlocked AT&T) - all running on the $30 Walmart 100 min 5GB/4G prepaid plan. Love it!

Rocket 4G USB stick, Rocket 2.0 4G USB stick, Dell Streak 7 tablet - all running on the $25 1.5GB/4G Mobile Broadband prepaid plan.

Tried it last night and didn't work with Opera Mini running via the emulator or going the normal route. It connects to T-Mobile... but no net access. Oh well... it was worth a shot.

Did you use a handler version of Opera Mini?

On the start page scroll down to the Proxy Type field and select HTTP
In the Proxy Server field enter: u.web2go.com.server4.operamini.com:80
Then hit Save at the bottom left.

Got it working via the Opera Mini handler. Thanks very much for the info and help!

Do you know of any other browsers that might work similarly with the Rocket 4G and would display regular sites instead of mobile? Also, have you got icons and images to work with Opera Mini via desktop?

I don't know of any other browser that would work with a voice SIM. I assume any desktop browser would work with an active BroadBand SIM.

Click on the big red "O" at the bottom right of Opera Mini, and then "Settings", there's one to load images and turning off "Single Column View" will display the desktop version of the page. A few sites will deliver there mobile site, but there's usually a link at the bottom of the page to switch to the desktop site.

BTW, the SIM that came with my Rocket 4G appears to be the same as a regular voice SIM - same UPC number (6 10214 62594 6) and item bar code (ZZZ260R034). I think you might be able to get a regular voice SIM for 99˘ online now and activate it on the BroadBand plan over the phone if you wanted to at some time. Maybe in that case it would be best to say you got the SIM with the Rocket 4G but didn't receive an activation code with it as people who purchased it in the recent online deal found as the activation codes may differ. The Walmart 60 day refill mentioned here seems like a good deal for daily use.
