The iPad is not a phone, it is merely a data device. Not the same as trying to activate a non-branded phone on Verizon or Sprint. Don't muddy the water when it isn't an equivalent comparison.
If I'm annoyed and you're annoyed, does that make us a paranoid ??

    1. Please provide some sourcing to prove that point. There are so many rumors flying already without adequate sourcing about FCC rules for the 700mhz band and VZW.
    2. Even if you are correct, VZW is the only company using the 700mhz LTE bands, so please show me one phone that is currently available for usage on VZW's LTE frequencies which has not been through the VZW acceptance process?
    3. Even if you're correct about the 700mhz band, that doesn't apply to CDMA/EVDO phones, such as the iPhone 4s.

Conclusion: Verizon lied about BYOD and a customer being able to bring a non-VZW phone to use on VZW. Otherwise many Sprint customers would have been able to activate their CDMA phones on VZW's network, assuming they could make the appropriate changes to the phone's programming to make it communicate with VZW's network, as so many now do flashing phones to PP, Cricket, USCC, etc...

There has always been an old list which included the Moto Q.

So the website Verizon maintains of approved, non-branded devices is a lie?

Verizon has clearly stated their rules for BYOD and not a single person here has attempted to follow them. PLENTY have whined about it but done nothing though.

I did go to that link, I am unable to find one single phone. Maybe it is that no other carriers use the Verizon type CDMA. Cause you are right - they maintain a known list of working devices - but just no cell phones there.

Quite simply it's not a list of non-verizon cdma phones which can be activated on Verizon. Also if one reads the website for details of submitting a phone for approval, it turns out that this is for companies/organizations, not individuals, which wish to activate some sort of specialized device/pda which would have Verizon connectivity. Sorry Vathe, but this is not as you claim, I can't just activate one of the Sprint cdma phones in my drawer on Verizon and when you click on the tab to get your device certified, it's very clear that this is not consumer oriented, rather business oriented. Nice try, but your claim that BYOD is viable is as lame now as it was several months ago when you made the same claim using the same sourcing.

So the CDMA users in USA are just stuck in a bent over position while GSM can do as need be?, not really though cause their 4G radios are also proprietary?

The process is there. You can follow it and get a Sprint phone activated. If you're too lazy, you'll just be stuck here complaining.

Just to be clear -- and I haven't looked at the list -- if I have a Sprint cellphone, an old Epic, say, or a SGSIII sph-L710, are you saying that there is an established process whereby I can activate that phone on my personal vzw family plan account?

Sorry, Vato, but I'm calling BS. I usually agree with what you have to say, but we both know that it just isn't as simple as you're claiming.

There have been people on HoFo attempt to follow the process and not get their phones activated. Second, if it were true, phone manufactures would send in test units themselves in order to get their products certified to open up another potential 100 million customers.

The process listed on the website you sourced does not allow for me to activate a CDMA/EVDO phone originally purchased for another carrier. The process listed includes becoming a registered developer for devices on the Verizon network and paying for independent laboratory testing of the device to get it approved for use on VZW's network. This does not fit the definition of the conversation regarding activating one of my old Sprint phones on VZW. This is about my building a new device and submitting it to VZW approval process in order to use VZW as the carrier for my device.

Nope, the link to the process provided is quite simply for a developer of a device to get approval from VZW to field that device using VZW as its wireless carrier. Pretty much the same process that HTC, Samsung, etc already go through, just at a different level and definitely not at the consumer level. In other words his link provides only buttresses the argument that BYOD on VZW is not possible in the manner you suggest.

The fact is that this link is BS. It only provides sourcing of how an organization would develop a product/device and go about getting approval for using that device on VZW. It does not provide for the consumer activating a non-VZW cdma phone on VZW.
