Can I call 911 in airplane mode?

If I were to dial 911 with my phone in airplane mode, what would happen? Would the cellular radio activate automatically? Would e911 work? For obvious reasons, I don't want to actually test this.

If it matters, I'm using Cyanogenmod 7.2 on an HTC Droid Incredible 2. Cyanogenmod is based on AOSP, so I'm guessing it does whatever stock Android would do in that situation.

I would think you could, since 911 is an emergency number. I hope so, lol. I guess we can't really find out, and honestly, I don't think anyone wants to, but hopefully, in an emergency, you could. Hope I helped(:

If the radio is turned off, then no, you couldn't. That's what airplane mode is all about, right?

I believe it proceeds to tell you that you are currently in airplane mode and it asks if you would like to disable it right then and there.

I just tried it on my NS, and it said 'to make a call, disable airplane mode first'.

I've never tried it but I would be surprised if 911 worked in airplane mode.

I emailed HTC, and Troy said it's possible:

Hi thank you for emailing HTC about your Droid Incredible 2.

When your device is in airplane mode, you are still be able to dial 911.

I don't know if that also applies to other HTC phones or other Android phones.

Heh. It also saves battery. As a GrooVe IP user, I usually don't need the cell radio when I'm on WiFi so I have it automatically disabled in that situation. Google Voice doesn't support 911, but GrooVe IP is smart enough to route 911 calls through the native dialer.
