Thanks for all the advice. What I have found out is that both AT&T and T-mobile have no activation fee 2$/day and $3/day plans with unlimited minutes and a decent amount of data. I will buy Sim and use one of those plans.
There is also a company called 'Roam Mobile' which has well-priced 1, 3 and 7 day plans with LOTS of data on 4G. Unfortunately for the iPhone, you can only be on 2G (some technical problem they have not sorted out). Other problem is there are only a few spots for pickup, not in my city. I would have to get it at Pearson when passing through.
My next question is whether I can forward my Telus number to my US number while I'm down there, but I'm sure I can find that out from Telus.
Beware AT&T recently changed their plans. The new daily plans don't include data , and data is billed by the kilobyte - equates to $2 per megabyte! That's the reference someone made before to AT&T forcing a $25 monthly calling/texting plan to buy the data buckets. Lots of us carrying corporate phones and personal iPhones were paying 10 cents a minute for voice, and buying data buckets until they changed the rules. Now we have to pay $25/month for a bucket of calling minutes and unlimited texting just to be allowed to buy data add-ons.
T-Mobiles $2/day plan seems like it would fit the bill for you. It's unlimited, and you only get 2G on the iPhone since T-Mobiles frequencies for 3G/4G are not iPhone compatible (so the $3/day plan is a waste). I tried the unlimited plan for a month and it wasn't that bad being only on 2G -- it was good enough to get emails and surf the web (albeit slower than 3G). All you need is a SIM and a $10 prepaid card -- the SIMs are usually on eBay for a couple of bucks (though I don't know who ships to Canada). Make sure you get a Micro-SIM for your iPhone...

Thank you this information was critical. I did not notice that you cannot buy the data packages with the $2/day until you pointed that out. Did this change literally in the past week? I read that section on their website before and did not notice it.
Regarding T-mobile, it all makes sense now - they do not support iPhone 3G/4G data speeds because they don't sell the iPhone, they are not set up for it. This also explains why ROAM mobility cannot support above EDGE for iPhone, as they use T-mobile towers.
I have seen a few articles suggesting T-mobile may be capable of 3G/4G speeds on iPhone very soon.
In the meantime, looks like EDGE speeds can actually be quite decent on T-mobile and my options appear to be T-mobile with edge for data (unlimited, which is cool), or AT&T with no data.
