I didn't give them any phone info (like IMEI) when I activated my Wal-Mart plan. I believe "new activation" just means a new sim. Though if you try to port your number from an existing T-Mobile account, that might not go over well.

Obviously in reference to the $30 plan. Does this mean the activation of strictly the sim, or does it have to be a previously un-activated phone also.
I read through an older thread, which I can't post a link to because I'm new here. The person bought a sii from ebay. After trying to activate with a sim ordered from the tmobile site, and calling tmobile after some hours, they were told the activation code is not eligable for the $30 plan.
Could this have happened because the ESN was known to be previously activated? Do they even have that info? I know people have reported problems with sim activation codes from the tmobile site. I was going to order a sg blaze, but now I've been thinking about ordering a new sii from ebay. But, if I can get a used one cheaper on craigslist and be able to test/inspect it before hand, I might want to do that instead. But not if I can't activate it one the $30 plan.

"new activation" means a new SIM and a new account. It means "don't call us to give you, an existing customer on an existing plan, these new terms because they're for NEW CUSTOMERS only".
Of course, a "new customer" could be an old customer ADDING this to his stable of phones.
This has nothing to do with the phone.
I appreciate the replies guys.
I've never been a tmobile customer in the past, and I don't care about porting my number. So I should be alright to use any tmobile branded (or unlocked i'm guessing) phone, correct? I'm sorry if these are repetitive questions, but I don't want to spend $300+ on a phone, and find out the $30 plan is not an option.
Should I just order a sim from their site, or are people still having problems with the activation codes? I'm guessing that's really the only option if you buy the phone elsewhere.
Any phone.
This is your first time using GSM service, right? Because the service is tied to the SIM only, it doesn't care what phone it's in.
No, not at all. I just always kept the sim in the phone it came with.
I'm just nervous about how people said they had trouble activating, because of bad codes and what not. If I buy a phone somewhere for say $350, then a activation kit from the tm website, and it/they say(s) I have a bad activation code, then what?
Then you do what the people here have said they've done when they have that situation. You *did* read about that, right?
You just call them up. My activation code was bad, I called them and they put me on the WalMart plan with no problem. I got transferred around and the call dropped once or twice, so it wasn't like an ideal experience. But it took about 20-30 minutes of my time to get it activated. For the huge data speed increase over VMUSA, it was time well spent for me.
what aurora said, which is what everyone else said.
ok thanks guys
You can get a new sim and activation code on the Tmobile website for 99 cents. Not too much to worry about.

yep as everyone said in the case of gsm phones its new sim on new account. and for the 30$ plain its either a phone from Walmart being they don't sell sims or a phone/sim from the tmobile website.
...or a SIM/activation kit from the t-mo website plus any old t-mo phone you get from anywhere, new or used.
My question is, with a given SIM, can I do the following?
1. Activate a new SIM on $30 plan
2. In month two, move to $70 plan
3. In month three, return to $30 plan
