LOL Oh yeah, I've heard that. A lot. When I was an AT&T customer, and I went out on the hill south of town to get an EDGE signal, I might get 100 Kbps on a good day with AT&T's EDGE, which their customers here STILL get, by the way. My 1.9 Mbps Verizon/Pioneer is just fine, and as I said earlier, 38 Mbps LTE is just 10 miles away!

Roaming on Verizon prepaid is 69 cents a minute. Native EDGE is way better than that. I'm glad to hear the Verizon prepaid iPad plan allows roaming tho!

Correction it used to be 69 cents a minute. Now it's 20. That's still worse than native EDGE. That's why I'm telling him he should be glad AT&T at least covers it:

"Roaming is the ability to place and receive calls on cellular networks outside the Prepaid Rate and Coverage Area. When roaming, your phone will display a roam indicator (indicator varies by phone*make and model). The roaming rate for the Prepaid Calling Plans*is $0.20 per minute (includes airtime and long distance)."

[QUOTE=Mark Uhde;14894396]Doesn't mean the app isn't correct. Depends what it's reading. Higher speeds require higher order modulation and/or less forward error correction. Thus, require a better RF environment. A lot more of AT&T's network is probably 21mbps capable than most people realize, it's just 64QAM over the air isn't the easiest modulation to attain in the real world. Heck, at first cable systems had issues with 256QAM and had to do 64QAM for digital cable (back when they were made for analog and many connections were iffy). If 64QAM was the best the cable systems of yesterday could manage, do you really think it's gonna work that well in a noisy air environment.

LTE brings a more advanced air interface that makes higher order modulation work better. UMTPS is just a wide CDMA channel - when there's traffic, it's noisy.

Well I don't think the app is detecting the technology AT&T is using but I know at least in my area they are not using 64QAM 21 Mb/s. Running a speedtest with my Vivid next to my brother in laws OneX they run identical speeds. There is no faster AT&T phone currently than the OneX When tethering with my computer, the speedtest site I use also shows network capacity which is always under 15 Mb/s day or night. With an LTE deployment coming to southest Michigan by the end of the year, it is unlikely they will upgrade to HSPA+ 21.

Pays to read the whole thread, I'm seeing. Mark seems to like to leave out things.

Also pays to be a native, lol. Hard to judge the situation from Montana, you would think, but people do it anyway.

Honestly being in an EDGE only area myself at this point I would rather PAY $.20 a second than use crappy half rate GSM voice and slow EDGE. Of course you wouldn't really know since you live in a former Alltel market with supposed 100% 3G overlay

And Btw. who the hell cares about prepaid and who even brought it up? ggore is a postpaid customer with UNLIMITED off network usage unlike AT&T. What about the many AT&T customer's in roaming area's that get no service at all with prepaid and get kicked off for using 24MB in a month?

True, everyone's an authority from 1000 miles away, LOL, including me! From looking at AT&T's coverage maps, there is very little EDGE around Montana, AT&T's done a very good upgrade job there, considering how much of the state is completely unpopulated open ranch land or desert country and wilderness mountain area. As Mark has stated in the past, it may not be fast 3G, but at least the potential is there, sites have been upgraded evidently and are ready for better backhaul, etc, which should mean better speeds should be in the offing at some point, and which is more than one can say about the 1/3 of Oklahoma or almost 1/2 of Texas for example that are pure EDGE.

To Mark's original post on this matter, I don't care if coverage is provided natively, via roaming or a program like LTEiRA, only that service IS provided, and using current technology. Right now, AT&T is not doing this here. Neither is Sprint or US Cellular or T-Mobile. Verizon IS doing it, through an innovative program that is not purely a roaming agreement. It makes actual use of spectrum they hold yet have no plans to build out themselves, so they are allowing a local carrier to use that spectrum, put it to good use, so customers of both companies can benefit. IMHO this is a FAR better solution to the problem.

Disputing his fact has absolutely nothing to do with the discussion at hand, but whatever.

Just because they aren't deserts to you doesn't mean that they aren't, in fact, deserts. And if you are just kidding, only one icon, the or is sufficient to get the message across. But you used the Snark and Crazy icons Attachment 83982 (which you happened to not mention in this post) which are pretty much guaranteed to mean you are NOT kidding but instead are belittling or putting down the credibility of the opinions and/or poster in question. Carpet bombing a post with all those icons or graphics doesn't help make it any clearer either. I don't mind kidding at all, just be clear about it. Now I'M moving on, back to something that is relative to the topic of the thread.

You are too uptight, relax, gees Louise. I don't belittle others on here, you don't stay on here this long or get the rep I do by being a jerk, which I am not, and never have been. You seem to be angry about life, fine, but don't take it out on us.

Us? "Angry with life" because I disagreed with you about whether or not there are deserts in Montana? I never used the word jerk. Wow, you really ratcheted it up with that post! I think you are kindof a quirky poster on here, placing your litany and travelogues into every thread regardless if it has anything to do with the discussion or topic or not. I have kidded you about that in the past and it's all been in fun, as I have told you on many occasions. It's quirky and odd, but maybe that's your intent, or maybe you're trying to defuse things when the discussion gets too heated. I don't know and I don't care whether that's true or not. But trying to make me out to be a bad guy and saying I am angry at the world simply because I disagree with you is just ridiculous.
