    International Roaming

I find the new International Roaming rates on GoPhone very affordable. I am curious if anybody has been able to take advantage of them while in Mexico in general. And in the Playa del Carmen area specifically. How good is the signal where you used it.

Thank you very much for any input.

Here is the roaming map for Mexico.

I used this shortly after it first became available. It works as one would expect. Better rates than many mexican plans.

Playa del Carmen area looks pretty good on the map.

Thanks for the reply rfranzq, the map is useful but I was wondering if anybody actually used the service in the area just for confirmation and peace of mind. Anybody?

Just got back from Playa del Carmen yesterday. Had three bars or more all the time, even in my hotel room in Playacar that was all concrete. I did not make any calls, but did receive text messages. FYI, if you add a text plan, there's no additional charge for receiving the texts in MX, but there are additional charges to send them.

I called go phone customer support. They indicated that roaming is $0.25 in Mexico on top of whatever your plan rates. For example, calling a US number from Mexico would cost $0.25 + $0.10 pay as you go rate = $0.35 total cost. She didn't inspire confidence with her response / tone, but that's what she said. If anyone can confirm thru actual use please confirm.

Telcel has cheap SIMs but may not be worth the hassle if you are only there a day or two.

GoPhone roaming works well by all accounts and you can always use something like Google Voice to avoid the send SMS fees if you would like (depending on your data availability etc)

Here are the rules for charges while roaming in Mexico:

About GoPhone Pick Your Plan roaming in Mexico

Now you can use your GoPhone Pick Your Plan service when you travel to Mexico.

All voice calls made or received while roaming in Mexico will be charged $0.25 per minute. Mobile-to-Mobile and Nights and Weekend minutes can't be used while in Mexico.
You can also send text and instant messages for $0.50 per message, send picture, video, or voice messages for $1.30 per message, and browse the Internet for $1.95 per kilobyte. Domestic rates apply when receiving messages in Mexico. A compatible phone is required.
To make an international call in Mexico, you'll need to use the international number format, which is (+), followed by the country code, and then the phone number. On most GSM phones, you can get a plus sign by holding down the 0 key. The country code for the United States is 1, you would call the U.S. from Mexico by dialing "+1", then the area code and number. To make a local call in Mexico, dial the 10 digit number (area code and local number).
When roaming outside the U.S., most phones allow you to reach voice mail by holding down the 1 key. If you are unable to reach voice mail this way, dial your own wireless number (inserting a +1 before the number) and press the * key during the voice mail greeting. You will need to know your voice mail password. Calls to voice mail when roaming internationally are billed at international roaming rates.
To reach Customer Care while roaming in Mexico, you can call 611 from your wireless phone or +1 (408) 962-1025 from any landline phone.
Although this quote refers to Pick Your Plan, it also applies to Pay As You Go plans.
