I think I bricked my Galaxy S3

I try to get into recovery mode and it just keeps giving me a "Recovery Booting" in blue text across the screen, then flashes the Samsung logo for a second then just goes black. Now it's been vibrating for a half-second every five seconds.

So am I sunk and need to do an exchange or am I doing something wrong?

Can you still boot into Download/Fastboot mode? If you can, then you can use ODIN to reflash a recovery console, like ClockworkMod Recovery. If that works, you should be able to restore your phone, especially if you have a Nandroid Backup. Only if you CANNOT get into Download/Fastboot mode is your phone officially "bricked".
