Yeah AT&T was fine anytime i was around a major city, and def works better in SE Ohio (thanks to them getting the "Former" AT&T Wireless 850MHz network that was built out quite well), but overall if you're going anywhere north or west of Chillicothe Verizon will be way better for your needs (that's the old AirTouch network, and they spared no expense building out Ohio early on)

SE of Chillicothe was the old pieced together Alltel network, and while it's fine the 3G is not as good, although has came a long way from when it was Alltel.

While I can't speak for OH, MI or FL areas, down here in SoCal (I may actually pass by Detroit this week), on a Samsung Galaxy SII, I 'typically' get 6Mbps down. In weak areas maybe 1.5Mbps. I have hit over 10-14Mbps down/3Mbps quite often though near cell sites. The 4s would probably peak at 8Mbps if the area is set up (I have hit 6Mbps with the iPhone 4).

As others have mentioned that if you're waiting for ripping speed - the iPhone 5 - assuming it has LTE will be out. I'd expect to pay a premium for it though. Heck, I'm happy with the speed of my old iPhone 3GS (have hit 5Mbps!). One benefit currently on the 4s on AT&T (assuming you'd use it) it being able to talk and surf at the same time over wireless over 3G or better. I can't say about that area in OH south of Akron.
    AT&T... your world, throttled.

Personally, i always get the "S" model, as it stomps out most bugs/issues the "new" design had the year before, and that's always done me right. The 4S is still quite a good phone, and will be fine 1-2 years from now.

Most of Ohio is patchy 3G/EDGE once you go into a building outside of the cities still, AT&T still has a long way to go and the maps definitely over promise in the HSPA department and not to mention the overloaded network in the cities promising failed page loads at peak times of day. They've gotten leaps and bounds better in Columbus though, but still not up to VZW standards.

Consider m2m's, if the people you talk to use ATT and you go with Verizon, you will be an outcast by them because they have to use their minutes on you! Ever wonder why carriers have free m2m, that's why!

I've traveled across Northern Ohio along 80/90 and US30, i'm in Toledo (and was recently) a few times a year and travel through the NW corner.

AT&T has come a long way in northern ohio and generally Toledo is pretty good. They just deployed a lot of 3G along US30 in the majority of ohio and filled in a coverage gap around Bucyrus which is nice. I am still waiting for 3G to launch in and around Mansfield OH and up to Akron which I've read is going to happen this year, and would like to see more of it in the NW corner which I've also read 80/90 was going to get.

Overall i had pretty good coverage across the state in my travels but could use more HSPA (in which they have been making progress on lately) and there are a couple of areas which may lack coverage.

No worries guys, I am not doing anything until I get a hands on with the iPhone 5... but it sounds like VZW is the way to go.

How are they out west and down south? Arizona, Nevada, Florida..

I sort of find it funny no one has recommended sticking it out with Sprint until they throw the LTE switch...

I can't say I hate it.. it is fairly reliable.. just data speeds are incredibly horrible ... here is a screen cap, 4pm Friday afternoon in a very popular suburb of Columbus.

I will say they all did give good reviews about sprint call quality. I think sprint can turn it around if they stick to their vision plan

Arizona would probably be better on Verizon, as At&t is on 1900MHz there. Vegas is OK on At&t, the strip has a bad rap there - especially during CES.
