Slow Data in Strong 4G Coverage

I am experiencing very slow data in strong 4G coverage with 3 or 4 bars using a Samsung Galaxy S 4G ( 21 mbs ) completely stock Gingerbread 2.3.6. Customer service says their are no reports of issues in my area.

Most of the time if I reboot the phone or cycle airplane mode the data will return to normal immediately but not always. I suspect it is my phone but all my settings look correct. I an using the epc APN. Is their a better APN?

I am completely stumped and would appreciate your input. Thank you

Coverage will expand to 100 million LTE pops for the first half of 2013, with the second half of 2013 expanding to 200 million POPs covered. Release 10 LTE (2×10, 2×20) will be better performing than all other competitors.

Odd it works when you reboot. Have you tried factory resetting your phone? Maybe a rogue app or even malware is using bandwidth?

I have that problem where I live. Great RF (full bars) but no backhaul so my speeds are around 200 Kbps even with full HSPA signal.

Nyc needs either more spectrum or backhaul. Speeds dont go past 5 to 8mbps. It sucks since i have a gs2. Havent seen the high speeds that my sig show since then.

I'm starting to see this in certain parts of DC as well. Most consistently in Penn Quarter/Chinatown/Metro Center. I've also seen it at some odd places. Guessing cell density is the issue there.

Edit: Forgot to mention this occurs all the time on the Metro at busy stations. It's actually gotten bad enough where I've had to hop on edge to get slightly faster speeds.

If EDGE is faster then it's NOT a back haul issue... must be spectrum?

I'm actually not sure we can say this either way. Emulation of 2G services over MetroE is messy and I think involves setting QoS settings. T-Mo had a presentation at NANOG about a year ago.

Anyway this was at 13th and F St. NW Washington DC today.

Looking at that screenshot you might want to close some of the endless applications you may have open, and as they could be utilising data while you doing the speed test.

Nope they weren't. Dog catcher keep alive, google music which was paused due to buffering, pdf that was previously downloaded, etc.

I also check Network Monitor prior to running the speedtest. This is also a daily occurrence.

Not throttled. Using v6 only APN which doesn't have throttling currently. I'm also on a grandfathered plan (Total Internet - VPN). I also just 7mbits here (different location in the city).

I do know while im in nyc, the epc apn usually sucks for me. I usually use the internet2 apn. Off topic, but what is the v6 apn? I know i get a v6 apn using the epc apn as v6 only, but half the sites don't load, including the play store.

It's the epc APN using v6 PDP context but last time I checked, it routed me to a difference GGSN than v4.

In any case, the Google issues have been fixed as they officially turned on v6 for everything during W6L. The two issues I have are 1) Anything that uses IPv4 literals (Skype, Spotify, Netflix) are broken. 2) v6 SUPL support has been approved for Android but just missed the cut for 4.1.

Ah, ok. Thanks! I still can't use the epc apn using plain v4 in nyc, ever. Facebook uploads fail, music streams barely work, and it just sucks. No issues with the internet2 apn. I think i had the v6 working with the internet2 apn. try that?
