Is it possible to buy a One X on your own and put it on a ATT pre-paid plan with no problems?

Straight Talk could be an option for prepaid. They use the AT&T network for $45/month. Unlimited text, talk, and 'data'.
Downsides of ST:
- Customer service is a joke
- They will cut off your data if you go over a hidden limit (seems to be between 1 and 2 GB a month)
Still, for many the price is right.
Yeah, I have thought about that. The 2GB cap a month is fine, but the 70-100mb a day isn't. I don't ever go over 2GB a month, but I go over 100mb a day easily. I don't always use data, but the days I do, it goes over 100mb usually. And the lose your number thing isn't so great neither.

I use an ATT HTC One X on AirVoice and it is working perfectly. I would recommend you look at AV and RP if you are looking to save some money and are concerned with ST daily caps. They allow you to use your 1GB anyway you like. Customer service is also excellent with AV and is US based.
Comparisons for Unlimited talk & text plus 1GB of data on PrePaid:
ATT = $75
AV = $60
RP = $55
